The Society for A Healthy Mouth - Healthy Child (Alberta) and the Foundation for A Healthy Mouth - Healthy Child in the U.S.A were founded by Dr. Smith as he observed a significant increase in the occurrence of early childhood caries (ECC) locally. Upon further research, he saw that this was a problem throughout North America. ECC, which can begin at as early as 9 months of age, can and does spread to include all of a child's teeth. It is an infectious disease and if it is not treated or treatment is delayed - a form of child neglect/abuse - it can lead to serious health issues that can impact the child for their entire lives. Dr. Smith recognized a need to provide the public compelling evidence that ECC was a disease that was about more than just baby teeth. As a result, awareness campaigns enabled him to teach why it is critical to begin preventive dental care from the child's first feeding in order to stop the occurrence of ECC. Children with untreated and severe ECC have been associated with iron and protein deficiencies, anemia, elevated stress hormones, sleep deprivation, chronic pain, and infection. All of these factors can and do impact the architecture of the brain and can result in other systemic changes that can negatively impact the child for a lifetime. Dr. Smith is planning to expand the awareness program by speaking and concurrently, through the not-for-profit organizations, have volunteer oral health professionals put on free assessment clinics for children 12 months and younger. Leonard Barry Smith, DDS, MSc, FRCD(C), FAAPD, LDABPD, studied at the School of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, and Dentistry at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Following his graduation in 1968, he received a Master of Science degree in Pediatric Dentistry as well as a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the Ohio State University. An inductee of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Dr. Smith is a published author and former dental editor for Family Health in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Furthermore, he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
