gothic literature is fun because everyone is kind a freak. even if you’re not a freak most of the people around you probably are so you’ve just kind of got to accept that. you do need to have an obligatory Normal Guy though, that’s crucial to the whole thing, story doesn’t work if there’s not a least one person entirely out of their depth having a decidedly bad time. bonus points if there’s something supernatural; but you can also just have some vaguely supernatural elements that are never really explained all that clearly (don’t even worry about it). gotta set it in a castle or theatre or any other such place that is generally foreboding in the dark but also has a pretty kickass aesthetic. and there’s probably at least some allusion to sexuality (repressed or otherwise) in some way, and even if it’s not obviously there you’ll probably find some way to link back to it. there’s also often a deep observation on human nature, what it means to be a person, to be good, fate and love. and also maybe a mad scientist
