So I was getting lost in a Merlin Wiki rabbit hole, as one does, and I stumbled across the page for spells. And turns out the writers actually put a lot more thought into it than I initially thought (they're not actually just shouting random words in Old English). But what shocked me the most was learning what Merlin was actually saying to Arthur while he was unconcious in the Poisoned Calice episode. I always thought he was trying to enchant some sort of protection spell to keep Arthur safe while he couldn't be there for him. But turns out he was actually declaring poetry, POETRY to Arthur the whole time!

That's right, Merlin was declaring actual POETRY to Arthur on his deathbed!! I kept seeing the wiki mention verses from a book called Beowulf and I got curious so after a quick Google search, I found out that it's actually one of the most famous epic poems in Old English and I just lost it!! I never thought this episode could get any gayer...

the fact that merlin and Arthur are supposed to complete eachother but never got the chance. their destiny really said that they were two sides of the same coin and then never let them show it. merlin probably did complete Arthur (aside from knowing about magic and adjusting his mindset and the laws alike) - he made him better, he helped him run the kingdom. but Arthur never knew about the things he could've helped merlin with. all of the decisions, the demands of being emrys, all this responsibility he had. they were two sides of the same coin but nothing ever came of it because of all the secrets standing in their way. there was this whole side of merlin he never saw, but one I think with time he would've come to understand and relate to.

I mean think of how Arthur could've eased merlins stress about their destiny, now a shared responsibility rather than a huge burden on Merlin. it was also a source of hope for him, as we can see in every interaction with a sorcerer when he says "it won't always be like this". he's reassuring himself as well - and Arthur could've done this. when he was obsessive or myopic Arthur would be there to let him take a step back. Merlin needed someone to remind him of his initial goals of bringing magic and peace to camelot. someone to ground him when he was faced with all these horrible decisions. someone who understood how he felt and what he was going through.

and maybe the nastier parts of their destiny could've been avoided. merlins mental health could've actually survived the show (pls someone help that man) and Arthur could've developed into the fair and just king he wanted to be, aware of magic and what it can do, good and bad.

two sides of the same coin, equal but opposites, two halves, whatever you want to call it. just with no more secrets. they had so much untouched potential and it makes me sad.
