Cultural Autism Studies at Yale (CASY, ethnography project led by Dr. Dawn Prince-Hughes) is delighted to welcome Ariel Cascio, Ph.D. on Thursday, September 25, 2025, 3-4 p.m. EDT (2 p.m. CDT, 12 p.m. PDT) for their ongoing discussion series on Zoom. There is no cost to attend, and international participants are welcome. For this and future events, RSVP by joining our free Meetup group online at https://tinyurl.com/4cj83cwe
DESCRIPTION: Living Ethics Hangouts with Ariel Cascio. Ethics refers to the study of good and bad. Key ethics questions include β€œwhat is the good life?” β€œHow do we achieve a good life?” β€œWhat do we owe one another?” and β€œWhat should we do?” To answer these questions, we can think about things like values, preferences, harms, and benefits. There are often no easy answers. In these ethics hangouts, we will chat informally about everyday ethical issues that impact autistic people. Each hangout will center around a specific topic and meeting times will vary.
BRIEF BIO (as written by Dr. Cascio): Ariel Cascio, Ph.D. is joining us from the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary Lands of the Anishinaabeg – Three Fires Confederacy of Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi peoples, the land also called Michigan. Dr. Cascio is an Assistant Professor in the Center for Bioethics and Social Justice at Michigan State University. They are an anthropologist who studies social and ethical issues around autism and neurodiversity in Europe and North America, especially Italy. Their research projects largely center on the questions β€œwhat does autism mean?” and β€œhow do groups account for the neurological diversity of their members?” You can read their research at https://arielcascio.wordpress.com/
ABOUT Cultural Autism Studies at Yale (CASY): An 'ethnography' is an exploration of how a group of people express themselves in a cultural way. Autistic people have a growing kind of culture, and each autistic experience is a vital part of it. Dr. Dawn Prince-Hughes is an anthropologist, ethnographer, primatologist, and author who is autistic. Join her for an exploration of the importance of autistic self-expression and the culture that grows from it. Those who wish to share their content are free to do so on our private Facebook groups (see below), organically contributing to a growing autistic culture.

Cultural Autism Studies at Yale (CASY, ethnography project led by Dr. Dawn Prince-Hughes) is delighted to welcome Lori Hogenkamp on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at 7pm EDT (4m PDT). There is no cost to attend, and international participants are welcome. For this and future events, RSVP by joining our free Meetup group online at https://tinyurl.com/2w3af7k5
TITLE: Rethinking Autism, Systems, and Stress through the Evolutionary Stress Framework (ESF)
DESCRIPTION: Autism is often framed through narrow medical or social models that miss its complex, adaptive nature. The Evolutionary Stress Framework (ESF) offers a new lens, integrating systems science, energy regulation, and neurodiversity to understand autism as an emergent profile shaped by stress dynamics, not a fixed disorder. This talk will explore how bio-neurotypes, predictability, and allostasis interact to influence health, connection, and adaptation. By reframing autism within a complexity model, we can move beyond symptom-chasing to build environments that sustain diverse neurotypes.
BRIEF BIO: Lori Hogenkamp is the Director and Founder of the Center for Adaptive Stress, where she develops and teaches the Evolutionary Stress Framework (ESF). Drawing on research in neuroscience, systems theory, and evolutionary biology, her work redefines stress as a driver of adaptation rather than simply a threat to health. She specializes in connecting neurodiversity, allostasis, and cooperative evolution to create more effective, personalized approaches to health and education. Lori’s cross-disciplinary perspective bridges science, advocacy, and lived experience to inspire new solutions for complex challenges. Learn more at https://peripheralmindsofautism.com/

Cultural Autism Studies at Yale (CASY, ethnography project led by Dr. Dawn Prince-Hughes) is delighted to welcome Clover Johnson, LSW, Ed.D on Monday, September 8, 2025 at 10am EDT (3pm BST). There is no cost to attend, and international participants are welcome. For this and future events, RSVP by joining our free Meetup group online at https://tinyurl.com/43p2cdsy
TITLE: Be Longing: The Underbelly of Neurodivergent Intersectional Student Distress in the AAOG
DESCRIPTION (as written by Dr. Johnson): Beβ€’Longing holds two truths at once: the enduring state of yearning for acceptance (I be longing) and the human need to belong. This talk brings those truths into focus through the lens of older Black women with late ADHD and autism diagnosesβ€”students who, paradoxically, represent many communities yet belong fully to none. Using a poem as a starting point, I examine the vulnerable, overexposed lives of Black women with late ADHD/autism diagnoses navigating higher education without sufficient representation or support. I trace the deep irony that many of us are from the first cohorts of Black students -trailblazers in the 1950s–70s, who fought desegregation and civil rights battles benefiting protected classes including disability and gender β€”yet we now find ourselves among the most invisible in higher education: older Black neurodivergent women.
BRIEF BIO: Clover Johnson Clover Johnson, LSW, Ed.D embodies the spirit and the transformative power of late discovery. After overcoming numerous academic challenges early in life, she realized in her 40s to assign failure not to herself but to the education systems that were ill-equipped to address systemic biases and intersecting oppressive pedagogies. A brilliant scholar, Dr. Johnson’s research centers on the experiences of older Black women with ADHD and autism, exploring how the original OG can flourish in creative spaces. Through her innovative work, she has established transformative environments where Black women can use play as a foundation for well-being, rest, meditation and empowered goal achievement.

Cultural Autism Studies at Yale (CASY, ethnography project led by Dr. Dawn Prince-Hughes) is delighted to welcome Dr. Liam McDermott on Monday, September 29, 2025 at 4pm EDT (1pm PDT). There is no cost to attend, and international participants are welcome. For this and future events, RSVP by joining our free Meetup group online at https://tinyurl.com/ytkf43ah
TITLE: Neuroqueering Physics Problem Solving
DESCRIPTION (as written by Dr. McDermott): Neurodivergent students learn, do, and think about physics in ways that are not supported by dominant educational structures. To investigate the ways that neurodivergent students solve problems non-normatively, we conducted a literature review of neurodivergent STEM undergraduate learning and performance and think-aloud interviews with neurodivergent physics majors. In this talk, I will discuss the results from our literature review and preliminary results from our think-aloud interviews and talk about implications for pedagogy.
BRIEF BIO: Dr. Liam McDermott (Liam) is a neurodivergent physics education researcher. He obtained his Ph.D. in physics from Rutgers University and is now a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Connecticut - Avery Point working with Dr. Erin Scanlon. The main focus of his research is investigating the ways neurodivergent undergraduates learn and perform physics. To do this, he applies a Neuroqueer Literacies framework to think-aloud interviews with neurodivergent physics undergraduates. In addition to research, Liam also teaches introductory physics and is working to develop neuro-inclusive pedagogies for teaching introductory STEM classes. Outside of academia, Liam is an avid gardener, theatre nerd, and enjoys tidepooling, foraging, and relaxing with his cats.
