How come so many fishing nets end up in the ocean? Do fishermen just throw them in?

They get abandoned a lot, particularly when they snap or get snagged and can’t be unstuck. It’s estimate that about 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear are lost or discarded per year, so it’s a very serious problem and it accounts for an estimated 46% of ocean plastic.
