“If something like that is your biggest concern, then you’re even stupider than I thought.”
The thing is, she’s right; she is stupid. But it’s not as much as Ookurikara is saying, venom and hurt and loneliness crushed like cracked glass.
(He doesn’t say, I trusted you, even if he had, in his own way.
He doesn’t say, I missed you, even if he had, in his own way.
He doesn’t say, I waited, I waited, I waited, and I thought maybe it was because I wasn’t enough--even if he isn’t, in his own way.)
“You could’ve taken us with you. Even one would’ve been fine.”
He came right out and said it. It was just like him to have no tact. Then again, there was no way around dodging a question (well, statement, in this case) when spoken like this. When he had managed to see her bare back, she didn’t know, but her shoulders tensed nonetheless.
“…Yeah.” She agreed, “I’m pretty stupid. If you could do me a favor, could you not tell anyone else?” It wasn’t as if she had been trying to hide them or anything, but she’d prefer not to answer questions from all the others regarding what had happened while she was away. Well, not so soon, at least. “It’s fine to be angry with me. I did a pretty shit thing.”

“Normally,” he mimics, his voice terse, feet unmoving as he decides to stand his ground, “If a master decides to go off somewhere dangerous, they bring their blades.”
But Bel? Bel didn’t. She left them all behind, and for what? Because she wanted privacy? So she could prove herself? What stupid reason could there possibly ever be? At the end of the day, they’re all swords--weapons given human form, but not really human, never like this. So what does she have to hide?
“I saw your back earlier. You had scars.”
Ah. So he’s upset, after all. She released her hold on him, slipping until her feet made solid contact with the ground. “There you go, acting all cold again!” She was forcing herself, of course, but she would give anything for a sense of normalcy at this point. As she spun on her heel to continue on to the next place, she continued on her tangent. “Normally, if a girl as cute as me hugs someone, I receive a reaction like ‘Wow, I’m the luckiest person alive~!’ or something.”

...So, that’s it? He’s supposed to take her absence and accept it, as if she hadn’t just gotten up and disappeared with neither explanation nor trace? As if it hadn’t made any of them worry, as if it hadn’t made any of them wait, as if it hadn’t made any of the tantou cry, did aruji leave us because we weren’t enough?

“...Get off. You’re making us waste time here.”
@drxgonblade
“You were so cool, Kuri-chan-!” Came her girlish squeal as she tackled him in the largest of hugs she could manage. She knew that there was no need to worry about knocking him over, like the time so long ago when he had been too fatigued to stand. Despite taking such a long absence, everyday behaviors and the like had reverted back to normal. Just like always. Or at least, she hoped so.

“Huh? Hey hey hey hey, you’re not going anywhere without me, dragon boy. I came for a reason,” Izuminokami picked up his pace, “and that’s to watch out for you. Don’t be cocky enough to think you’ll be able to do this alone.”
Damn guy and his arrogance, he never liked Ookurikara for one reason or another. The way he just waltzed past him like he was some hotshot was enough to tell Izuminokami that it just wasn’t going to be that easy to finish the expedition today.

...How agitating--and loud.
“You came here because you were assigned to collect materials,” Ookurikara replied evenly, though his annoyance shone clearly in a gaze of bright gold. “I don’t need a babysitter, and I don’t plan on being one for you.”
It wasn’t... quite his intention to be so rude, but the fact that Izumi thought he needed someone to care for him was insulting. I will fight alone, and I will die alone.
I’ll prove myself without your help.

...Tsk. Of all people to partner up with to be sent on an expedition, no matter how simple, of course it had to be Izuminokami Kanesada. If his wardrobe didn’t garner enough attention, then surely, his speech and mannerisms did.
“...Don’t get in my way,” he muttered, brushing past the Shinsengumi blade with quick steps. “I can find the materials by myself.”

“I’ve been alive longer! Dress up isn’t limited to children. Why do you think there are a bunch of sexy halloween costumes on the market?“

“Then go be shameless over there. I’m leaving; you’re being too noisy.”

“Just as I thought-someone as young as you wouldn’t understand. You’re too innocent for your own good.”

“I’m older than you by centuries, and you barely pass my shoulders. Aren’t you the child for wanting to play dress-up?”

“Who knew you were so bold, Kuri-chan!”

“They’re either fined heavily or executed, depending on the crime. Why are you blushing...”

“Kuri-chan, you’re just in time, I have your outfit all ready for you!” Whipping out a red suit with fishnet tights, red pumps, and bunny ears-she handed it over. “Look what I got for you!”
“...”

When you walk away, you don’t hear me say, please, oh baby, don’t go--
“Take that kind of thing to Mitsutada, not me.”

“Ichigo is a kitty maid, Uguisumaru is in tea ceremony clothing, Tsurumaru is a doctor, Taroutachi and Jiroutachi are school girls, Ookurikara is a playboy bunny, Kashuu is a pirate, Yasusada is a classic lolita, Mikazuki is a princess, Tonbokiri is a teacher, Nihongou is a knight, Hasebe is a doggie butler, Mutsunokami is a naval officer, Iwatooshi is a firefighter, and Mitsutada is a police officer. Am I missing anyone?“

Did he know what a playboy bunny was? No. Could it have been a good thing? No. Why? Because Bel thought of it specifically for him.
“No.”

“What are you thinking about so intently? You’re going to get wrinkles!” She would have said if he frowned, his face would get stuck that way, but it looked like she was already too late for that. “Let me guess! My sanwia is so cute in my jacket I have to restrain myself from hugging her! Something like that, right?”
“Nothing.”

“I don’t want to hug you; didn’t I tell you already that I’m not here to get friendly with you or anyone else?” But the words had long since lost their venom, and if he were being truthful--evident not in speech, but in action--remaining here in her possession wasn’t... bad. With a soft exhale, Ookurikara straightened the jacket a bit further despite knowing it wouldn’t quite sit well on her shoulders. “...It’s big on you.” Which made her look even smaller, so--yes. Perhaps cute wasn’t terribly far off.

“As far as I know, that statement doesn’t hold true for everyone, not even swords. I could tell you all my secrets, sure, but then I wouldn’t be nearly as mysterious!” She squeezed the remaining water from her pigtails until they dried, however, they remained limp, making her appear like some sort of droopy animal.
“I hope you don’t mind me keeping your jacket for a few days. Don’t worry! I’ll be sure to put it to good use!”

“If your secrets were that easy to tell, they wouldn’t be secrets.” But he neither demanded to know them regardless nor allowed himself to care. He wasn’t summoned to be her confidant, or even her friend--and he didn’t want to be, even if he had to admit that she was... important. To a degree. In some way.
(As a master ought to be to its blade.)
“Keep it; I have a spare, anyway. Just stop walking around wearing... almost nothing.”
