WORDS CUT OFF MID-WAY AND Sam felt anger slide across her like a second skin, felt it lick at her heels in anticipation for what could prove to be one of the biggest blow outs ever seen. she didn’t expect them all to drop everything and anything to listen to her theories, listen to her try and explain what they should and could be doing after the Incident, but she deserved at least a moment of their precious time. fists clenching on empty air whilst Sam let the irritation try to fizzle out --- as much as she WANTED to scream, doing so in the middle of the corridor wasn’t exactly the best.

but she was tired, so tired, of watching Emily and the others continue on as though nothing had happened. they’d slot back into normal life within a few days of ‘recovering from the trauma’ and now here they were. “ Em- Emily, please stop, and would you just listen to me for once in your life ! ” 

irritation lingered and she wanted to snap, make a scene, tell the world what her friends had really done up on the mountain --- why two of them hadn’t come back down. not many knew about the note, less still that it was a prank involving Hannah’s crush on Mike. most people just assumed she’d gotten offended and run off into the night, Beth on her heels and they’d fallen off a cliff and disappeared. the fame the rest of them seemed to gain from death sickened her, so she continued, with a tone full of derision, “ could you at least pretend to care that two people are dead, two of your FRIENDS, or is that too much to ask ? ”

         and we don’t always get what we want. 

IT WAS UNFAIR really, how tragedy had struck Blackwood mountain, taken her best friend and torn her apart piece by piece in a matter of sleepless hours and their desperate, frantic searches in the snow. but Beth was gone, lost to the storm or down a ravine or-- she was gone. 

          “ Hannah... ” soft and careful to match the way she moved, gentle hands coming to curl over her friend’s shoulders. soothing touch where Sam couldn’t quite find the words yet. she wanted to say that, with time, things would shift back to something close to normal. that it wouldn’t haunt her for months, years, decades to come -- that the gap left behind by Beth would heal. Sam would always be there for her, but none of the condolences and empty words in the world could ever help. Hannah Washington would always be the girl who lost her twin. 

heart breaking with every beat, Sam gave a short sigh, helpless in the face of grief. the others could go back to normal, could laugh and go to parties and feed on the twisted popularity of surviving the mountain where their friend hadn’t, the hollow sympathy offered by everyone they came across. they hadn’t cared about her then and they wouldn’t care now. “ I’m sorry Han but- listen to me. it’s not going to be easy. it’s going to be hard and long and it’s going to hurt every day and things will probably never be how they were, ever again. but you’re not alone okay? you’re not alone. ”
