Background
Helmet stickers have been an unique addition to the uniforms of college and high school football teams since the 1950s. Many fans don't understand the significance behind the tacky stickers. A player can earn (and lose) a sticker based on their performance on and off the field. They can earn stickers for postivie plays such as: touchdowns, field goals, interceptions (for), big plays, etc. They may also lose stickers for team and law violations or poor plays, such as: interceptions (against), fumbles (against), or unsportmanslike penalties.
Over 35 college teams use the sticker system at the FBS level (division I). Of the 35 teams, none are more well-known than the leafs at Ohio State University and the spear at Florida State University. Both schools have made the system very popular with their play on the field, and by the added demention on their helmets.
A Nebraksa football coach in the mid 1950s is credited with inventing the system and the earliest picture of a helemt with such sticker comes from the legendary linebacker Dick Butkus of Illinois University and later the Chicago Bears.

earned for his outstanding playing ability at the
University of Illinois.
