A Day of Tribute

Another peek into the world of Monoculi, with a sort of mostly arboreal leech. Compressible, elastic spines and muscular extensions of the respiratory system give them a spring-like speed for seizing prey and hopping around. These animals comprise a diverse family of mouse to housecat sized predators, and are known by an equal array endemic names, with meanings like “vine which bites”, “snapping worm” or “flying tree-branch”. Most live in tree canopies or within the branching “roots” of bio-caves, a habitat type unique to this planet’s biome.

After the sun expands into its red giant form, titan, one of the moons of Saturn, heats up enough to cause it's ammonia filled water 'glaciers' to melt- covering most of the planet in ocean aside from the polar regions.

Life follows, and just like earth, titans' methane filled atmosphere slowly gets replaced by oxygen with the help of photosinthizing microorganism species. And life is as it was on earth, several billion years ago now.

[Titan still holds some of its liquid methane, ethane, and hydrocarbon lakes- some life does live there- but it's not the focus of the story.]

Out comes k-p2, the moons dominant sophont species. They occupy a niche similar to that of which earth penguins did- but they're huge. Thick skulls break any ice and fat stored in their bodies to hold in heat.

Instead of lungs, they have a circular breath motion that passes through the tube sorta trachea organ that absorbs the oxygen and immediately converts it to carbon dioxide- due to their size it takes a while for it to leave the system. From the nose to down the chest. This tube is also filled with small structures that work as gills when they submerge.

While not much is known about society before The Fall, the Old World’s penchant for creating bioengineered creatures or peoples is evident, with the Grasslings, the Hakdor, and the Beastmen as the major examples of surviving ‘biological relics’ from that time. Thought to be among the last organisms to be created alongside the Hakdor, Grasslings are believed to have been created as organic workers for space stations and in system planetary colonization efforts, serving as livestock and edible greens simultaneously.

The presence of genes from photosynthetic microbes within Grassling leaves allows them to pull more carbon dioxide out of the air than a plant of the same size, making them highly efficient in photosynthesis. Even though the Grassling exhales carbon dioxide from its animal lungs, the leaf-like portion of their head helps offset any oxygen they breathe. It also allows them to function on less food than an animal of equivalent size due to the sugars produced through photosynthesis. Grassling stems, as well as the leaves at their ends, are prehensile, meaning it can function as an extra limb when required. Grasslings are hermaphrodites that reproduce through a flower at the top of their stem, producing a hundred seeds at a time.

Each Grassling is designed with a purpose in mind, often working in synergy with other Grasslings to complete various tasks. While they can understand speech, they cannot speak themselves, instead communicating to each other in clicks and chirps in their own mode or pseudo-language. Since they are able to follow semi-complex orders in a similar way that a seven or ten-year-old child would, ethical concerns have been raised over their purpose/role as highly disposable labor, especially since they straddle the line between sapience and sentience.  Because of the traits they share with the Hakdor, it is widely accepted were created as counterparts to Grasslings, possibly to serve as their “leaders”.

One key similarity the Hakdor share with Grasslings is that they have a leaf on the top of their head, which may be to help Grasslings believe they are bigger versions of themselves. Additionally, all Hakdor are hermaphroditic and were intended to supplement humans on off-world colonies. Both Grasslings and Hakdor also have perennial third eyes, though the Hakdor’s third eye is highly developed and functional. Another interesting correlation is that Hakdor hands have eight fingers, which also happens to be the same number of known Grassling types.

A little something something with my punnett cubes

This is one of the “heads” of my recent alien design, they have antler-like projections that I decided to test out the three possible allele types. The classic is dominant A, recessive a, and my addition, alpha as the third option. It’s not perfect for I’d most likely have to rework the whole genetic system cause dominant vs recessive is a pretty binary mechanism and it’s hard to imagine how would a third option affect the organism’s phenotype. Here I’ve decided to test it out on the percentage of the antler that gets covered by flattened out surfaces, with both the dominant and the alpha allele increasing its surface area, the difference being that the dominant allele creates fewer large disks, while the alpha allele creates many smaller disks that branch out like cactus leaves.
