btw lucy’s the one that tends to forget anniversaries, not natsu. lucy wakes up to a beautiful platter of fruits with the words “HAPPY 5TH MONTHS SINCE WE FIRST KISSED IN PUBLIC ANNIVERSARY, LOVE, NATSU” spelled out and she just has to smile and pretend she knew about it bc it’s the most important thing for natsu and he literally tells time by lucy-anniversary things. “oh what’s the clock? well it’s been 3 years 2 months 19 days and 11 hours exactly since me and lucy shared our first taco platter so it’s probably 17:40 right now”. and believe it or not; he’s always on the dot correct.

Gray walked with his team through the dark and quiet town of Magnolia. They had finally completed the 100 Year Quest and immediately headed for home, hoping to make it to the guildhall before their friends had gone to sleep. 

Nevertheless, they arrived in the dead of night. 4:30am to be exact. No one awake other than their group. 

They reached the end of the straight path. To the right would lead to Lucy’s apartment and Gray’s house further on up. The right led to Fairy Hills. 

“Well, I guess I’ll see you guys in the morning,” Lucy yawned and started making her way along the familiar canal path, Natsu and Happy sleepily following suit. 

“Goodnight you lot,” Erza said quietly and headed left towards Fairy Hills with Wendy and Carle. 

Gray stood where he was, quite literally at a crossroads. His heart was racing and his eyebrows were tight. He clenched his fist before he spoke. 

“Hey, Erza?” 

The girl in question turned around to face him with a frown and making a noise of acknowledgement. 

“Is everything alright, Gray?” Wendy spoke up, taking a few steps towards him. 

“Please do not tell me you’ve lost your house keys while we were gone,” Erza said stoically and placed her head in her palm, ready for him to state the worst.

He looked up towards them with a small, but nervous smile. 

“Do you mind if I come with you to Fairy Hills?” He asked softly, knowing it would be a controversial question but he was willing to fight his case.

“Sorry, Gray. But you know the rules,” Erza spoke sternly back to him, and Carle nodded in agreement with her arms crossed, flying on the spot between the two girls. 

“I know that, it’s just..” He trailed off, silently thanking whichever deity looked over him in this moment for Natsu not hearing what cheesy line he was about to say. “I haven’t seen Juvia in so long and I was really hoping to see her when we got back.”

I think this scene is underrated like Natsu and Happy were going to watch Lucy be quite literally tortured and Natsu might’ve had to watch Lucy be killed again (by literally being chopped in half) also I like how you can tell how more desperate he gets as the scene progresses and the way he calls her name a lot

Why given among all other romances

In most romcom/ romance mangas, the feelings described are what makes us like the work. But in given, I love how Kizu is showing us that loving each other clearly is not enough. Akihiko and Haruki like each other at the same time, yet their lack of communication lead them to have a big misunderstanding and a sexual tension. If they had had communicated better (and if akihiko wasn't basically drunk and was more aware of what he was doing of course) that wouldn't have happened. The story isn't exactly focusing on why people fall in love with a certain person, nor how do they confess. It focuses on the feelings after realising you are in love and how you deal with the person who also has romantic feelings for you. They can confess, they can go out. But even when you love someone back, you may not have the same idea of a relationship as them. As for Ugetsu and Akihiko, they deeply loved each other and they quickly started dating when they figured they were feeling the same thing. But they missed the opportunity to express clearly what they were looking from each other, in a relationship. That lead them to break up because of Ugetsu's hard love for music.

Love according to Kizu

This is typically what I love in given. They do have the basic musts of a couple that we already know. Kizu doesn't need such a process to show how people fall in love and I believe there's no reason to fall in love irl. You don't love someone because they helped you doing something, they impressed you, they are beautiful... You just love someone for who they are. No one can explain that objectively. That's what I (partly) learnt from given. Kizu just says "see, those two are in love. how are they going to deal with that? are they compatible? will this love help them to become better people?" And she shows us different situations, depending on the personality and on the context of the characters' love for each other.

Shizu and Hiiragi (my favs aaaah)

For example, Shizu and Hiiragi didn't imagine love the same way at all. While Hiiragi had an innocent vision of love with "holding hands" and hanging out together (he read too much cute shojo manga lol), Shizu was dealing with his sexual attraction for him, restricting himself so Hiiragi could enjoy their times together. Though, while restricting so much without saying it properly to Hiiragi who clearly is an egocentric and who thinks everyone thinks the same way as him (i love him i swear he's my fav), Shizu got angry and even thought that Hiiragi was in love with Yuki. Hiiragi and Shizu both love each other from the start but this lack of communication and those different ways to see love makes it so much more difficult to just date suddenly.

Don't get me wrong, I love the process of two characters falling in love like in Kaguya-sama wa kokurasetai, or Fruits Basket but I think that being aware of the other's love for us isn't enough to start dating. Establishing the rules and clear up the misunderstandings before starting to date is important and very interesting to read in a manga.

hi i know i'm late but given's ending feels so painful to read ahhh i can't.

when i read it first i was surprised to see so many parallels between mafuyuki and uenomafu. imo the links were very well made and as usual kizu made it appreciable to read🫶🏽

as almost all of the chapters of given were moving and emotional, i thought the last one was going to shake me. though it was so simple and relaxing and i think it made me even more nostalgic🥹

i love to see how uenoyama became comfortable while hanging out with mafuyu as a lover (?!even kissing in public?!) but who was expecting mafuyu's last words? hahahaha! that's what i meant when i talked about parallels, u know this funny moment when yuki asked mafuyu if they could have sex when getting home.

mafuyu also became more confident towards his relationship with uenoyama after they went through a lot. they got closer and that was the funniest way to show it <3

i love to see how mafuyu embraces music and is more experienced in this field. he's still friends with ugetsu and that's kind of adorable like?? who would've thought they'd get along even if they're so different? (btw french ugetsu gives me chills😫)

even kasai got to tell her feelings in the last chapters, though no one expected her to have a moment in this flow of emotions.

the only little disappointment i have is for haruki and akihiko not having much screen time, or no screen time at all. i can't really figure why kizu chose to show more of hiiragi and shizu than haruki and akihiko but i assume it's because she just wanted to not mix everything up so it'd be confused.

AND ARE'NT THEY LOOKING FOR A NEW APARTMENT TOGETHER HERE??
