Albert once accidentally used the backside of a sheet from his notebook as stationary as he was writing van Zieks. Van Zieks sent it back and wrote "Before you begin a tirade of apologies for not using proper stationary, I must admit I found your substitute quite endearing. Please do entertain me more." He likes receiving little personal things from Albert. He likes the round stains of coffee mugs, ink splatters, notes, formulas he doesn't quite understand and always sends back, the napkins from restaurants Albert visited, the back of scrapped blueprints.

Van Zieks' letters are always very neat, on parchment paper, written with a feather and ink, and signed by wonderful signatures. Albert's letters are always a series of little notes and PSs and PPSs; there is always at least a PPPS. He collects notes, things that randomly shoot into his brain and that he wants van Zieks to know, for an amount of time, then numbers them and puts them all in one envelope to send to Britain.

Whenever he has nightmares, van Zieks rereads some of Albert's more lighthearted letters. They always start with "I am alive and well and I hope you are too" and end with "Your friend, Albert."
