earlier i saw an Aventurine x reader smut fanfic in which the reader is his sister and i just had to SAY SOMETHING even if i expect no one to give a fuck

i’m gonna make a quick statement while i’m eating spaghettio’s because i keep seeing posts made about the situation with the slave aventurine fics.

disclaimer: i am NOT a person of color (poc). i am germanic-japanese who was raised primarily in asian culture. i am not a person of color and my words should be taken with a grain of salt. their opinions on this situation should carry more weight than mine.

CW: slavery mentions, death threats and romanticization. please do not send any threats to anyone perceived to be involved. i have omitted ALL names or allusions in my post to ensure the safety of all involved.

my stance: this is a stance where all parties were wrong, but to varying degrees.

about the author: the author was fine. their fics did not romanticize slavery, nor did they come off as savior complex. PLEASE send me screenshots of their fics if i’m wrong, but i don’t believe their ethnicity was ever stated. i’ve seen a lot of “white savior complex” being spread around, but i can’t find their ethnicity anywhere.

i interpreted their fics less as “they’ll keep him as a slave but make it better to deal with” and more as “we’ll improve his life to make it easier for him to become a citizen”. this is mostly because, in aventurine’s lore, he’s immediately judged based on his branding and his culture. i assumed that it would likely take a lot to take someone out of that kind of situation and stereotyping.

about the death threats: gross. unless they explicitly say things like “they find this hot”, or even romanticize such situations openly, death threats aren’t okay. people dogpiled on the author and sent them death threats.

about the situation as a whole: tumblr has already driven the author off of the platform. it’s time we let that die down. if we don’t want to see this sort of content, we block it or report it. making posts about it won’t help in the long run because it can negatively impact peoples’ lives, even if they don’t intend to be hurtful to anyone or anything.

we live in an age of technology where we immediately make accusations and that is the main reason why i never mentioned any usernames. i have everyone blocked on my end. that being said, im leaving the comments open for everyone to discuss. in no way am i romanticizing their fics or babying the author, but we’ve already driven them to delete their fics and possibly off of tumblr. it’s time to let them rest. we didn’t even know if they could have been some teenager who didn’t even know any better yet. things went too far, let things rest.
