i keep seeing this idea that Real wheelchair users all have custom active chairs, and that transport/standard chairs are just an embarrassing stereotype. “no one really uses those!” “stop drawing disabled characters in standard chairs!!”

well, plenty of us are a stereotype. sorry. custom chairs require MONEY and good medical support. meanwhile active chairs are unusable for some people. i used an uncomfy transport chair (the kind with tiny wheels and no way to self propel) for a year, and a standard chair for 7yrs. until i got my powerchair i was only ever pushed by a carer. a lot of disabled people will never use an active or custom chair. don’t pretend we don’t exist just because we don’t fit some cool independent ideal.

in my teens i literally felt invalid as a disabled person because i didnt have the ‘real actual’ type of wheelchair everyone talks about online. just my garbage transport chair that my mom had to push. ​but people with shitty wheelchairs exist and are extremely common actually

“I don’t think I’m disabled enough to use this mobility aid”

Ok so what if that’s true?

If you have a health condition that impacts your ability to function in one or more life areas, you’re disabled. If you’re disabled, you need help to live your best life.

Let’s say you choose a cane as a mobility aid, because you need help. If the cane doesn’t end up helping, then you don’t need to use it!

And so what if the cane only helps a little bit? It still helps and you deserve that little bit of help.

And so what if it only helps on some days? Dynamic disabilities are real and you don’t have to use the cane on the days you don’t feel like you need it.

And so what if the cane isn’t really helping you right now, but it’s helping you prevent injury or degeneration or fatigue? Bestie, that’s still HELP. I’d much rather you be less disabled and not rely on your mobility aid, than you damage yourself until you feel like you’ve earned it.

And so what if you don’t feel like the cane is really helping your disability directly, but it’s still useful in signaling to others that you’re disabled? That’s helpful and you deserve that.

If you’re disabled, you don’t need to be “disabled enough” for a mobility aid. If you’re disabled, you don’t need to rely and depend on your mobility aid in order to use it. If it helps mitigate you disability, fucking use the mobility aid.

Because of how he was raised i think he would be a little bit confused but once you sat down and actually explained it to him he would accept you no matter what. And if anyone was homophobic towards you, it would be very hard to prevent him from doing anything.

Rick:

Rick would probably pause to think about it before he realised that not saying anything was making you nervous from his response, causing him to bring you into a hug congratulating you for being brave enough to tell him. Just like daryl if he found out someone made any sort of remark they would probably be injured or dead.

Negan:

The man wouldn’t hesitate you bring you into an enthusatic hug, congratulating you for coming out and being proud to know you. If he was confused he would sit down and listen to you making sure he made ways within the sanctuary to make you comfortable, anyone that was disrespectful towards you if you told the rest of the community they would 1000% get the iron. The man would be proud to be your ally

Maggie:

Maggie would straight away bring you into a hug, the woman not even hesitating. She would sit down and listen to everything you had to say before going out with you to make sure you were comfortable within the community’s. She would constantly correct people on your preferred pronouns or your sexuality. Making sure no one missunderstood you and that you felt valid and safe within her company.

Glenn:

He would be similar to Maggie, the man being extremely thankful you trusted him enough to tell him. Would keep it a secret for as long as he could for you, making sure you were comfortable wishing the group, helping you set up a safe place to tell the rest of the group out your news. Making sure you felt valid af and hurting anyone that made you feel otherwise.

Tara:

Being part of the community herself she would be exstremely supportive, helping you find ways to tell the others and supporting you against any remarks made by someone else in the community. She would always be a safe place for you.

Carl:

Carl would hug you straight away, sit and listen to everything you had to say about your sexuality/gender. He would always remind himself of your new pronouns or to help you find people that fit in your sexuality. He would threaten anyone that was homophobic towards you, giving the person an earful. He wouldn’t stop until you or rick dragged him away.

Aaron:

Aaron would invite you around, creating a meal celebrating you coming out to him, would be a huge gossip with you about anyone you liked or found attractive. Would set you up on secret dates with people. Created a warm environment knowing you’ll always be accepted by him.
