since this is picking up notes i want to be clear what i mean:

sometimes this term is used to refer to someone who invokes their agab to delegitimise and undermine a trans woman. this undermining behaviour unfortunately exists, it is blatant transmisogyny and there's no excuse for it.

this term can also be used to refer to the stereotype of afab nonbinary people as quirky girls trying on pronouns for clout. i have seen it used in this sense by both trans and cis people. if somebody googles "theyfab", this is the definition they will find. this stereotype is extremely transphobic and there is no excuse for it either.

when someone mentions "theyfabs", it isn't usually followed by a clear definition. the word itself is a shorthand, it is assumed that the reader knows what it means already.

a random afab trans person reading it could interpret it as a good faith critique of transmisogynist behaviour. however, i know for a fact that when a stranger uses a term that could plausibly be a transphobic dogwhistle against me i'm not inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt. this kind of vigilance is trans safety 101 and we all do it.

even assuming absolute good faith all round, there's a decent chance the whole thing collapses into shit slinging and the fundamental issue gets buried.

if this specific term was necessary and there was absolutely no way around using it to make an important point, it could maybe be justified. i don't think it is necessary and i think it prevents that point from being made. we can come up with a better term that isn't as inflammatory and doesn't fire off strays in every direction. it's ambiguous, hurtful, we don't need it and we're all better off without it.
