So we’ve done a bit of talking in this post about the editing of this scene and how that helps it to be great, but I really gotta say that the biggest thing that ALLOWS for a scene like this to be edited in the way it is, is the fact that you have an incredible team of stunt and fight performers and choreographers who were given the time and resources they needed to design a good fight scene, learn it, rehearse it, and then get the shots they needed. A lot of the time when you see a bad fight scene in a movie that looks like it’s edited poorly — with lots of shaky cameras and jump cuts and close ups — it can often be that the editor just needed to try and scrap together a salvageable fight scene from a bunch of footage that was either shot poorly or from a performance that was rushed.
A lot of the marvel movies had some of the best stunt and fight choreographers and performers in the world, and Winter Soldier definitely is the movie that shows it off best because it’s so much more grounded, and so much less CGI is needed to tell the story of those characters, but I think people really would be surprised if they knew how many stunts and fight scenes in some of the MCU movies were done for real and how much thought and effort went into them. In a lot of cases, weeks worth of preparation happen before shooting on a particular scene even starts. In other cases, plans may change at the last minute due to any number of reasons, disastrous or otherwise, and these choreographers and performers are relied on to not only make changes to the choreography on the fly, but have it be good enough to match the quality of the rest of the film.
Corridor Digital has a video series where they get stunt performers to watch stunts with them and try to break them down or talk about their own experiences doing the stunts, and it really opened my eyes to how incredible the teams of people that set up and execute these kinds of things are.
In this video they actually have the stuntman who played Bucky in this fight scene talk about it:

I also strongly, strongly recommend the previous video in this series where Gui DaSilva talks about some of his experiences as the stunt performer portraying Black Panther.
As someone who has edited films before, I know people say that “films are made in the editing room” but I’m personally all too familiar with the fact that oftentimes you can only put out something as good as what was given to you. And these editors were able to do as great work as they did (and their jobs were made that much easier) due to the fact that everyone shooting that day, but ESPECIALLY the stunt teams, were on-fucking-point.
goat fight. non-negotiable.

Photographers all know about polarizing filters. They remove reflections off the surfaces of objects. We use them to see into water or windows that are obscured by those reflections. But anything with an even slightly glossy surface has a layer of reflection on top. So if you have a shiny green plant, it can remove the shiny and reveal a very saturated green underneath. Polarizers also remove a lot of scattered and reflected light from the sky. Which reveals a deep blue color you didn't even know was there.
Here is a photo I took of my circular polarizer.
Tumblr media
And the first thing I noticed when walking outside during the eclipse was the color of everything was more saturated, just like in that circle. Apparently, an eclipse significantly reduces polarized light and I got this creepy feeling because I was only ever used to seeing the world like that through the viewfinder of my camera.
The other thing I noticed was my outdoor lights. I leave them on all the time because I never remember to turn them on at night. And usually the sun will render them barely visible during the day. On a very sunny day they almost look like they are off.
Tumblr media
But you can clearly see they are shining and even flaring the camera during the eclipse.
Our eyes adjust to lighting changes very well so it was hard to tell how much dimmer things were, but that is a good indication. I took this photo a few minutes ago and you can see how dim the lights appear after the moon has fucked off.
Tumblr media
I did a calculation using the exposure settings between these two photos. The non-eclipse photo has 7 f-stops more light. That is 128 times or 12,700% more light.
A partial Pringle eclipse cut the sun's light by 99.2% and somehow our eyes adjusted to make it seem like a normal sunny day (with weird ass saturated colors).

bourdain [v.o.]: chances are, this is a place you’ve only heard of. a place of brutal survival and political instability. chances are you’ve seen the footage of commonwealth knights rounding up orc revolutionaries and thought ‘how could anyone live in a place like this?’. chances are, you’ve never been there. welcome to the heart of the orclands, where i’m sitting down with an old friend: gulinar bonecrusher—political activist, poet, and surprisingly passionate pitmaster.
bourdain: oh wow, that looks amazing. and what do you call this?
gulinar: this is my father’s famous barbecue recipe. minotaur brisket, chili honey marinade, smoked 18 hours
bourdain: that’s incredible. it’s literally falling off the bone. it’s no wonder why the suicide rates of humans are so much higher than orcs.
gulinar *laughing*: they should come here, perhaps they would find new reason to live. for an orc, a meal like this gives reason to die in battle.
bourdain [handwringing]: yknow, i don’t knock the whole ancestral bloodlust and glory of combat thing, it’s just never been for me.
gulinar: many of the younger generation also feel this way. imagine—to be a poet without first being a warrior. what would they write about? but the commonwealth’s restrictions make this impossible. though i do not understand my children’s aspirations, we have been fighting all these years so they may be free to pursue them.
bourdain: amen to that, my friend. how often do you guys eat this, is this like a traditional holiday thing or what?
grug: throughout the spring and summer, when minotaur are in season, we eat this every day.
bourdain *chuckling*: you lucky son of a bitch.

enough reclaiming slurs, I think in 2023 we should reclaim nascar. they banned the confederate flag on all properties & their stance on lgbtq+ isn’t just performative bc in 2013 they fined a driver 10k for using a homophobic slur, condemned indiana in a statement for an anti lgbt law, and partnered w carolina’s lgbt+ chamber of conference in 2022. nascar was founded by anti-cop moonshiners/bootleggers who drove suped-up fords to out-run the police. #yaaascar
