A beginner-level resource I just learned about is LOTE4Kids: online bilingual picture books. My library sent out an email about it recently. If your library is a member you can search for their name or enter the LOTE4Kids site through your library's site. Simplified Chinese has four levels: 1 (40-90 words), 2 (90-220 words), 3 (220-540 words), and 4+ (540-1200+ words). There's currently 80 available languages. There's no ads on the web version but I don't know about the app. There's more than 100 books in Mandarin. You can take a quiz at the end of the book if you like. You can listen in your target language, or English, or both. I found the English voice actor really annoying but that's a small price to pay, I think.

I think it's funny that in French the word for "unicorn" is "licorne" because:

The word "unicorne" was first reanalyzed as "une icorne"

The definite article was then added, making it "l'icorne"

The new definite form was reanalyzed once again, resulting in "une licorne"

If you use Duolingo, maybe don't anymore? The company is moving to be "AI-first" and is using AI to generate their content. Meaning, AI is now generating your language lessons.

They announced that they were going to use AI for this a while back but now they're annoucing that they're getting rid of the contractors reviewing the AI generated content. So, very soon Duolingo is just going to be AI generated slop that might not even be correct.

For alternatives, I'd recommend checking with your local library. For instance, mine offers Rosetta Stone for free if you have a library card.

from a non English speaker : I don't feel heard when I speak in English , I am convinced that I can't express my essence in a cultural aspect , wich makes me feel like I'm keeping others in a fake comfort zone while getting nothing in return , I weirdly feel it's my responsibility keeping Tumblr and any social media a recognizable and familiar place ( especially for Americans )

something i have always found really weird is when english texts italicize words from other languages.

i remember reading a book as a kid and the author continually italicizing the word tamales

Still occasionally recall that post somebody shared on reddit(?) of their cats, introducing them by name. And someone in the comments asked "hey did you know that your cats' names mean 'deaf' and 'stupid' in polish?"

And this person answers "I am polish. The white cat is deaf and the orange one is stupid."

so I was talking to the polish guy and because I didn’t know how to say ‘I’m going to the shops’ i guessed and said idę na sklepy and he started laughing but didn’t correct me so when it next came up I had to use the same phrase which made him laugh again and I finally asked him today what was the correct way to say it and why did he find it amusing and he said that to him idę na sklepy means kind of ‘I am going to conquer the shops!’ and that he imagined me standing on the shops refusing entry to people because I was controlling the shops and he said the reason he didn’t correct me was because he thought it was an interesting way of saying ‘I’m going to the shops’ and he didn’t want me to stop and that he wanted it to take off in poland

My first name can - in English - be spelled Hussein, Husein, Hussain, Husain, Husayn, Hussayn, Hossein, Hosein, Hosayn, Hossayn, Hssein, Hsein, Husseyn, Huseyn, and other variations I likely don't know about because I don't care enough to think about it. My last name can be written in a variety of ways, and that's why I have trouble remembering my family members' e-mails by heart because each one of them uses a different variation of the spelling in their email.

Arabic doesn't have vowels and there are many letters in Arabic that do not have phonetic equivalents in Arabic, and some phonetic sounds in Arabic might be judged not as important to include in English writing.

Basing your claim that someone is scamming or lying about their identity because they spelled their name as Shahed on one occasion and Shahd on another is actually, genuinely racist. When my friend nabulsi read her ID it was in fact the one and only spelling of the name in Arabic.

Racism-induced skill issue on their part.
