my life...pt. 4
The road through my early undergraduate years was anything but clear, marked by confusion and numerous trials. What sparked my interest in medicine was my first ever job working at a hospital as a main desk receptionist. Every day I witnessed a constant flow of human experience: anxious families awaiting news, the quiet strength of nurses and doctors and the raw vulnerability of patients seeking help. I’d observed the immediate results of rapid decisions in emergencies and the consistent commitment needed for extended patient care. Being so close to the daily dramas and triumphs of healthcare ignited a deep desire within me to become a primary and active participant in healing and providing significant aid to people.
"If it was easy everybody would do it." I live by that phrase because 5 years of premed required great effort (the extracurriculars, “weed-out” classes, begging for rec letters, 7hr long MCAT) and 4 years of medical school is challenging (debt, personal sacrifices, “the faucet”, Step…). So, for someone to understand and propel through the obstacles and then they quit; I don't comprehend that. Out of a class of 160 students, three dropped out. Midway through 1st year, Embry Maddon dropped out because she was accepted into the training camp of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. She became a first year rookie for the upcoming season. We lost Channing Cao due to personality issues (the guy was a total weirdo and hated everyone else), and Liza Decker flat out told me she was too scared to leave but hated it too much to stay.  She dropped out after failing Step 2. We stay in touch, and she’d told me her very rich parents were threatening to cut her off if she didn’t return, so she swiftly married a loaded techie and now makes SAHM TikTok’s. I’m no stranger to giving up on shit; it’s healthy. However, becoming a medical doctor is meaningful and stable so I can’t justify it for this.
