Significance of Somnath Temple
Somnath Temple is known as the 'Eternal Shrine'. It is one among the 12 holy Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. These Jyotirlinga are 'Swayambhu' in nature. It means that these Lingas are self-manifested and no humans installed them.
This temple is one of the oldest temples. One unique fact about the temple is that it is situated at a place where there is no land in a straight line between temple seashore till Antarctica.

Somnath temple is believed to be the first among the twelve holy Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva.
The significance lies in the fact that Lord Shiva here appears as a fiery column of light. this is believed to be the place where Lord Krishna left for his heavenly abode ending his Leela. Triveni Snagam takes place at this place- this is the point where the three rivers — Kapila, Hiran and the mythical Saraswati joins. The famous Syamantak Mani or Philosopher’s Stone that is associated with Lord Krishna is believed to be safely hidden within the hollowness of the temple. This stone can create a magnetic field around itself that helps the Linga float from above the ground.
The Somnath temple finds its reference in the ancient texts like Shreemad Bhagavat, Skandpuran, Shivpuran and Rig-Veda. The Somnath Temple has been coined as the ‘Eternal Shrine’ it has been vandalised and destroyed many times by Muslim invaders. However, the temple was always re-built at the same spot.
Somnath Temple is well connected to the major cities through railways, airways and roads. The nearest airport is Diu which is around 80kms away from the temple.

About Me
Hi, I am Lakshmi Reddy, a travel lover and storyteller. I travel at almost all p[aces and share my experiences of the same.
My love for travel rose since a very young age and found no parallel to it whatsoever. I somehow found peace by travelling to big and small trips with my parents as a child and grew up creating an obsession with it.
This blog focuses on my travel experience on the holy shrines of Dwarkadhish Temple and Somnath Temple of Gujarat
