I misread an ao3 email and im very frustrated about it

specifically just now I checked my emails to see if I'd got any emails from works or authors I'm subscribed to on ao3, and there was one from an author I'm subscribed to, so naturally I opened the email to see what it was. I did not read it properly, I vaguely glanced over it and caught precisely two things: "[author's name] posted a new work" and a name under the "characters" section of the tags that began with "Arr"

And for about three glorious moments I was UNBELIEVABLY hyped thinking that an author I liked had made a fic for @fictionalcreator 's Heir To The Dragon God (assuming that the "Arr" name was "Arryn") which would have been really really cool for a number of reasons including but not limited to: I love fic in general and recursive fic specifically which....does it count as recursive fic if the other 'fic' is an original work? probably not but still exciting, and it might make fict happy who deserves it tbh, and I'd potentially get someone else to do excited yelling at about this awesome story

alas. I had misread the email. It was not a fic of Heir To The Dragon God, it was a Lord of the Rings fic. Apparently they have a lot of "Arr" characters judging by the tags. Gotta be honest I am not in that fandom and did not remember that

anyway that was disappointing but now I'm like hey if I don't already have people to happy-yell at about this maybe I can try to find some. in other words here I am once again reccing this story: go read this story

go. now. right now. it is SO GOOD I promise you. It's an original work centring around Arryn (best boy. I love him) and Riél. I am perhaps overly wary of spoilers, so, using just what you learn in like the first two chapters and a few vague hints:

Rièl, incarnate of the God of Flame, causes the apocalypse. Everything is on fire. During said apocalypse and indeed whilst actively dying, Arryn suddenly gains access to a System, which in-universe is treated as an Oracle and a miracle from the gods. Arryn promptly uses this to time-travel back before everything went to shit.

Unfortunately, Arryn has several problems to deal with. These include but are not limited to: Arryn may have additional knowledge due to time-travel, but unbeknownst to him Riél is also a wildly unpredictable variable who knows perhaps more than he should; ongoing betrayal, misunderstandings and deceit; and his System|Oracle's absolute refusal to give him any screens or notifications that aren't in cutesy colours with doodles of baby animals on. He's asked, several times, trust me.

It's an incredibly well-written work that has made me laugh out loud numerous times, has absolutely fascinating worldbuilding that is worked seamlessly into the narrative (it's very impressive!) and also does a pretty nice job at foreshadowing and hinting at events from the (erased?) timeline without being jarring. Also the characters will make you feel Emotions. Admittedly sometimes that emotion is RAGE (I did mention betrayal features in this work, right?) but the characters will make you feel emotions and you WILL get attached it's basically impossible not to

Actively hate the discourse against 24/7 places like I get where you're coming from but in my ideal world a lot of shit would be 24/7 just with more shifts and better pay because plenty of people prefer to work nights or have to be out at weird hours to get basic necessities for one reason or another and acting like necessary services keeping to almost a 9-5 operating hours and having multiple days closed ignores people sometimes do need things immediately and it's not all some lazy selfish desire and isn't inherently harmful to the employees

Hey. Minors following me. Internet safety is key!! NEVER include these in your bio/byf:

Medical diagnoses - this is nobody's business but yours. You don't owe anyone an explanation for why you are the way that you are

Trauma - same reason as above

Triggers - people can use these against you! Don't give people tools to hurt you. No one has to know what tags you block. Just block tags to stay safe!

Age - age is okay for adults to include but is iffy when you're a teen. Predators want this information, don't give people more than they need. Just state that you're a minor, that's all that anyone needs to know.

In general: stay safe. If you're not comfortable with every stranger out there having access to this information, you shouldn't post it on the internet.

Play devil's advocate and ask yourself about what would happen if someone searched for your information with intent to hurt you. You do NOT owe anyone an explanation!

Another dream comic. Had a dream where I was tied to a chair in a dark room and some hooded figures killed me after I begged for my life—but then I got caught in a time loop and so I kept trying to figure out what I could say to get them to not shoot me but they killed me no matter what I said. Started just shouting random stuff eventually.

googling shit like "why do i feel bad after hanging out with my friends" and all of the answers are either "you need better friends" (i don't; my friends are wonderful) or "your social battery is drained, you need to rest and regain your energy levels" (i don't; i've got tons of energy, it's just manifesting as over-the-top neurotic mania). why is this even happening. it's like some stupid toll i have to pay as a punishment for enjoying myself too much

If anyone has taken their eyes off what's happening to federal workers in the US right now, here's some highlights that we're hearing from our comrades across the government who have not yet been fired:

In one building (hosting multiple agencies), the locks on the bathroom were changed so employees no longer have any access to a bathroom during the workday. People are peeing in trash cans.

Elsewhere, multiple agencies have reported that hand soap is no longer being supplied in the bathrooms.

Toilet paper supplies have not been adjusted to meet the needs of a vastly increased number of in-office employees.

Employee-owned coffee and coffee makers have been stolen or thrown away without notice (it was already illegal for taxpayer dollars to be spent on supplying federal employees with amenities like coffee, so many offices have coffee supplied by pooled employee funds).

Meanwhile, many offices don't even have potable drinking water (recurrent legionella outbreaks), so employees have to bring their own water from home.

Despite an explosion in the number of workers in offices, cleaning budgets have been slashed and many offices are not being cleaned regularly enough to remain sanitary. Pests like roaches and rats are a problem.

The firings continue, legal and illegal. Entire programs are being cut. Managers have no idea when they might lose staff. Employees are getting fired at 6pm on a weekend or finding out when they're unable to log into their computer or when they receive a shipping label in the mail to return their equipment.

Through all of this, the DOGE employees in federal workplaces are enjoying incredible and expensive luxury: AI-powered sleep pods, entire dormitories so they can live in federal buildings, nurseries for their children on site, free food and beverages, laundry services, and who knows what else. They have special security to restrict access to their areas of the buildings, including armed guards.

And I'm not just saying this to lament how bad it is for federal workers. I'm saying this because, as workers are reporting this to one another, the response is, inevitably: "This is illegal." "Yes, but who would I report it to? OPM? They're a DOGE puppet. OSHA? They've cut OSHA. The Inspectors General? Cut. The NLRB? Cut. My union? No longer recognized."

There is no one left to enforce these laws, so taking away access to basic sanitation is now effectively legal. They are doing this to federal workers, who historically have been some of the best-protected workers in the country. They are doing this specifically because it demonstrates to the public sector that it is now legal to do these things to their own workers.
