in my ethics class today, the professor brought up the hindu cultural practice of Sutee/Sati, in which widowed women are forced to burn themselves to death on their deceased husband's funeral pyre. the man sitting next to me (who was also a marine) laughed at this. i told him, "you laugh, but if they (the widowed women) don't do it, they are stoned to death instead. many women have died this way". he continued to laugh and smile, like it was all some joke to him. i immediately sent in my seat change request afterward.

men find femicide and the abuse of women at men's hands amusing. it's all a spectacle to them. men are not our protectors.

People react really badly to the suggestion that you should take ‘bitch’ seriously as a slur/censure its usage and it’s abundantly clear that it’s because they don’t take misogyny seriously as a form of oppression.

How many women have had that word spat at them as they’re hit, sexually assaulted or killed by men? How many women have had the word used against them as a degrading warning, to keep them in their place? How many women have had it shouted at them out of cars, to remind them that they’re part of a subordinate class?

Why is that substantially less serious than someone using another type of slur to degrade or terrorise?

There’s a huge mistake we make when debating prostitution. It should always be talked about as a class issue. Prostitution is humiliation, exploitation and abuse for women as a class of people. It doesn’t matter if some girl claims she enjoys selling her nudes on OnlyFans, for example - what matters is how it affects females as a whole. I’m sick of anecdotal arguments being used for an issue that destroys so many lives.
