Me trying to make sense of the timeline from what I’ve heard:

The Isle is made by Merlin in response to Uliana’s break in. Can we assume that all party’s involved were also sent?

If so, Hook, Hades, and Maleficent are still gonna be on the Isle

Mal is still born. We can assume the other villains still exist as well. The Core Four still existed.

Hook is still on the Isle so like I guess Harriet, Harry, and CJ are still born. And now we have Hazel. No reason to suspect the Sea Three don’t happen.

Core Four + Sea Three = Original trilogy still takes place

Also the Mad Hatter is on the Isle now. He wasn’t before so that’s new. Every Hook needs their emotional support friend and Hatter’s grandson is gonna be Hazel’s.

I have no expectations for the rest of the plot. But if Uma is reprised in this one I’d like to see her interact with Hazel.

I have a one track mind. Always have.

I wanna start off by saying that this is no hate towards the actors. My problem is with the writers.

Am I excited for Red to have a younger sister? YES. My personal headcanon is that Red has 3 younger siblings (y'know, in a universe where the Queen of Hearts isn't an absolute tyrant), and now I can't wait to see what dynamic the two of them are going to have.

My problem with Pink, is that her name is Pink. WHY? WHAT WAS THE REASON?? It took me forever to get used to "Red" and now that's what they go for when Rosa/Rose was RIGHT THERE????

I seriously don't understand why Disney's so lazy when naming Descendants characters. Sometimes, we get absolute bangers like Calista Jane and others we get shit like Pink/Li'l Shang/Herkie/Hadie and I'm like… couldn't you have at least tried? Couldn't you go to a baby name website like every author in the world has done at least once and look for something better?

How do you expect us to care about the story of those characters when you couldn't be bothered to give them a decent name?

And speaking of Hook, we have a Hazel now :)

This one surprised me because I don't think I had ever expected them to come up with another child of Captain Hook. To me, Harriet, Harry and CJ are perfect and enough.

My problem isn't even that I think it's out of character for Hook to have four children. Actually, he seems like the type that adores the sex part but doesn't give a shit about his kids and is an abusive parent. My problem is that WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH HAZEL NOW????

I have such a perfect idea of how Harriet, Harry and CJ's dynamic is and now I have to worry about introducing a brand new sister. My second problem is that I love the idea of CJ being the baby of the family for more than one reasons.

Of course, I could just ignore her, but I'm actually curious about Hazel's character and love writing about the Hook family, so I've been trying to come up with my own headcanons for my version of Descendants in case Hazel lives and in case she doesn't and we're left with the original 3.

Max is... whatever. I hate that they're gonna have him be Red's love interest because she seemed so close to Maddox that it's weird to think she'd ever see him as anything other than a friend/brother figure. Also, I'm sure he only exists because they can't have Ace in the movies because it would contradict the book or something.

I just want glassheart to be canon, is that too much to ask????

Now (just let out the biggest sigh of my life), Luis Madrigal. He might actually be my new nemesis.

Again, no hate to the actor, but seriously?! They had to throw Encanto into the mix?? I would have no problems if their new character was like, Moana's son, for example, because I can see Moana existing in the Descendants universe.

Encanto, though? I love the movie, but no. Absolutely not.

It almost feels like those skits people post to make fun of Descendants with children of characters like Lightning McQueen and Buzz Lightyear.

Luis is not ever going to be a part of my fics but at the very least I hope Disney isn't so lazy as to make him have super strenght when that's not how gifts work in Encanto. It's not hereditary.

Honestly, I can't believe someone came up with his character and it got approved.

Everything points out to the new "core four" being Red, Chloe, Pink and Hazel, but since Rise of Red didn't do such a good job at developing Red and Chloe's friendship, I'm worried about how they're going to do that and introduce two new main characters and develop Red and Pink's dynamic because I'm sure Red isn't going to start off as the perfect older sister.

I think it'd be interesting if she felt resentment and jealousy towards Pink, because she didn't have a sister before the timeline change, but now not only does she have one, but Pink got to grow up with the good version of the Queen of Hearts and all the love Red never got.

Really nice room for angst, especially since Red and Chloe are the only ones who remember how things used to be and can't just go around talking about it.

Well, I don't know what else to say right now because I just needed to vent a little. At the end of the day, we can only hope that D5 turns out to be a good movie.

My Thoughts on Descendants Canon

I was thinking about it and wanted to share. I’ve noticed everyone from screenwriters to this fandom over the years has brought a LOT to the canon (including me) and this last movie…kinda doesn’t fit that canon.

We’ve always perceived these characters to be continuations of the OG Disney Movies. Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, etc all happened as they did in their animated movies and the next thing was Descendants. It’s likely Descendants Canon doesn’t even consider sequels (Little Mermaid 2, Cinderella 2 and 3, etc)

Now, lots of us (myself included) do nitpick some other Disney canons for fanfiction or theory purposes. For example, I roll with The Little Mermaid: The Musical Canon that Triton and Ursula and Poseidon’s kids. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure that’s never mentioned in the OG cartoon movie. Another example I’ve seen is folks accepting Maleficent (2014) as canon, which led to a lot of King Stephen is Mal’s father theories. Also, Greek Mythology? We all love discussing the complexities of D3 Hades being…D3 Hades.

Then there’s the books, by my guess written retroactively to the movies. I love them, I love the depth De La Cruz gives to this world. Unfortunately, I’m not sure book canon is heavily considered when writing the script (tho shoutout D4 for making Castlecoming a thing).

All of this to say: the Descendants Cinematic Universe (yes, this is DCU now) was originally thought to be based on JUST The original animated films.

Except now all those characters are in High School together? What?

I’ve said this once already, but it reminds me of The School for Good and Evil. All the Heroes and Villains went to school together and then after graduation went off to be in a fairytale. I think the DCU could be interpreted as something similar. Hear me out:

First thing: Let’s assume for a minute DCU is separate from the original movies it’s based on. The blue-haired Ella and the blonde cartoon Cinderella are different characters. A little trickier: Teen Maleficent and Maleficent (D1) are the same person, but not the same as Sleeping Beauty (1959) Maleficent.

Second thing: Take exact copies of all those Original Animated characters and put them together in the same place at the same time. Now they all go to high school together. This part is the SGE-like part, but the difference is there isn’t such a strict distinction of heroes and villains. Merlin teaches everyone. Their fairytales are their choice.

Which brings me to the third: ALL OF THE PLOTS STILL HAPPEN, and in their world it’s just common place and also translated differently. Ella still has an Evil Stepmother, a dance to go to, and a prince to see, but it doesn’t look like the cartoon at all.

Other examples:

Hades is indeed a teenager, and just casually a King of the Underworld and a God. That’s just how this place works.

Jaladdin. JALADDIN. If they’re together, their story already panned out, but maybe in a way that’s more DCU-like. Maybe Princess Jasmine needed to have a date to a certain royal event (instead of picking a suitor). Maybe good ol Vizier Jafar sent a skater punk in detention to a pawnshop for the lamp. Yes, Genie was a Genie, but maybe also a thriftstore owner who helped Aladdin get the girl with some thrifty style and a dusty magic carpet. I’m spitballing here.

My point is: all the fairytale stories will still take place, and all the characters are the same BUT separate from Original Animated Disney Canon. Aladdin already happened. Cinderella is currently happening. Alice in Wonderland is SO FAR in the future. Peter Pan may happen soon. Captain Hook already lost his hand, so he already blames Pan for that. (Can yall imagine its his twerp cousin or something, lol)

(I can’t explain Morgie. Morgana La Fey is from Once and Future King (King Authur’s story). She was not in Disney’s The Sword in the Stone, which is only 1/4 of OFK. The main villain in Disney’s movie was Madam Mim.)

This explanation also makes it a little easier to digest the fact that Beast was able to unite the kingdoms and banish the villains. If DCU was straight outta Disney canon, he would have to unite 1920s Louisiana (Princess and the Frog) with Aladdin’s Agrabah (just not real).

So yeah, that’s how I’m somehow wrapping my brain around all this. What do y’all think?

Okay but??? The way Ben is just so good in Descendants?? He’s so pure, and kind. Imagine getting crowned as leader of a kingdom at 16– there’s an incredible amount of pressure to look after your people and put them first, even though they don’t always believe in you; and no one believes in him in the first film. His dad doesn’t want to let the villain kids go to Auradon; Chad and Audrey, his two friends, don’t even want to associate with them. And the fact that he just ignores everyone trying to tell him “no, this won’t work” and pushes to make it work anyway??? We love one (1) determined boy.

I’m with this. For me it was always about trying to follow the aesthetic of the OG films. Gil’s hair wasn’t dyed, but he was still a VK. His parent also wasn’t a dragon like Mal’s or a Sea witch like Uma’s.

Historically, the Villains tend to be less human than the heroes, usually meaning they have unhuman qualities such as extravagantly colored features. The heros tend to be human, point blank. Belle, Aurora, Cinderella, Mulan etc were all for very human protagonists. Hence why I think Auradon style sticks to natural colors where Isle is a bit more left of center.

I started to see them lean towards colored hair spamming in D3 (Poor poor Audrey, Sarah Jeffery’s hair was perfect) but D4 was just a lot. I’d understand if maybe it was a current style choice but even young Ella had blue hair.

I would take it a step further and say their outfits were a little too samesie with their hair. The OG movies had more depth to their wardrobe, the first movie was a big example. If Red had highlights similar to her actress and Chloe’s hair wasn’t yk…bright blue, i think it woulda blended better.

Posting this here cause I've got nowhere else to but it annoys me so much that Cinderella and her daughter have blue hair in Descendants four.

Like, dyed/colored hair has always been a visual cue for the isle kids. That and their more alternative style serves to differentiate them from the preppy isle kids.

They even use this to great effect in d2 when Mal grows out her roots, showing that she feels a need to change to fit while Carlos and Evie don't.

I don't know it just shows a lack of care and understanding to me.

Can we talk about how much yellow Ben wears in the first movie and how be wears almost NONE in movies following?

In the first movie he almost exclusively wears yellow pants during the casual daytime. If we look at Beauty and the Beast, both OG and Descendants, Belle is almost entirely yellow and Beast is mostly blue with some gold but mostly just blue.

I think this represents Ben’s Belle-like nature. He loves seeing the good in people, but as he grows older and wants to be a good king, he looks to his dad and wears more blue. Even though he will always be more like his mom, he wants to look the part of King, which in his life is Blue.
