things I wish autism research actually tried to figure out:
why caffeine works for some of us, but not all, and even then it often depends on the way you take it and the dosage
how come all of us have gastrointestinal problems?
addendum to the above: what exactly are our gastrointestinal problems? are we genetically more likely to have autism be comorbid with gluten sensitivity/colitis/IBS/lactose intolerance/whatever else or is it something completely different? is it psychosomatic? the fuck
okay but how does being sensory-seeking work. and what does stimming do to your brain. what neurological function are we facilitating with flapping hands and rocking back and forth and spinning? wouldn’t it be great if we had a serious long-term study of the brain on stimming?
are you more likely to be autistic and LGBT?
what are things we do better than neurotypicals?
but no it’s always “how do we train the animals to be something they’re not” or “but what made you this way??” or “Time To Find A Cure”

Claybook
Game announcement from Second Order has an engine where everything has Play-Doh-like mouldable properties:
youtube
In the game, you step into the shoes of brave kids who bring the Claybook to life. Each chapter of the book challenges you with unique obstacles and puzzles. You possess clay blobs and morph them to different shapes in order to overcome tricky situations. Each shape has its own strengths and weaknesses, some even have special powers.
Claybook is a unique physics driven game. Everything acts like it would be made out of real clay. Every inch of the environment can be shaped and molded. Everything has matter inside it, not just an outer shell. Clay can be deformed, destroyed, melted to fluid and frozen back to solid.

there will be a moment when you realize you are more grown up than your parents are. this is the loss of childhood, my love. it is when you’re standing in the kitchen and one of your parents is screaming about something and you recognize: you will let them win the fight not because you are wrong, but simply because you know that they will keep shouting unless you drop the subject. you expect them to have childish understandings of things. they will hold onto their concept of the world as if it was not a changing thing. they must be right, and they must be somehow more right than you, always, in everything. their idea of control is so necessary to who they are that you just let it go.
this is the moment. you are 11 or 17 or 21. and you realize that you’re more mature than they ever were.
and in some odd, sad way, this frees you. where they have stagnated, you continue.

Being nonverbal is not being antisocial
If an autistic is so overwhelmed sensory wise that they can’t speak if they normally do (notice I said can’t and not won’t, there’s a huge difference there), that’s not antisocial behavior. That’s sensory overload.
Antisocial behavior (by the neurotypicals’ own definition) requires intent. It’s a choice. It might be for many different reasons. I’m not a huge fan of the term “antisocial behaviors” because it is always use to discriminate against neurodivergent people (and sometime chronically ill people as well).
Being nonverbal (or even semiverbal) is never a choice. In regards to someone who is verbal (as is not nonverbal all the time), becoming nonverbal is a product of their environment, which they can have zero control over. They may not have the choice to leave that environment either to regain their ability to speak. They may have gone into a shutdown or meltdown and need to recover from that to become verbal again.
And for those who are nonverbal all the time, it’s completely inappropriate to label them as antisocial. Good chances are that those labeling nonverbal autistics as “antisocial” whether they’re nonverbal all the time or only in certain circumstances both don’t understand autism at all and are ableist as hell.

Binary trans men, you are capable of being sexist.
Trigger warning for discussions of sexism, transmisogyny, rape, and abuse.
I just wanted to remind you, because almost every trans man I interact with is incredibly sexist. I recognize that whether or not we (sometimes we, since I’m non-binary) gain access to male privilege can be complicated what with sometimes being perceived as women and all. I recognize that some of us internalize the messages sent to men and some of us don’t. Lastly, I recognize that some of us don’t want or need to medically transition.
I want to be clear that these things don’t mean we can reclaim terms used against cis and/or trans women. These things don’t mean we deserve access to women’s spaces. When it comes to reproductive needs, things get a little more blurry. In the blur of these lines, however, trans women are most certainly left out. Let’s work to change that. In a support group, exclusively for women, however, we are not welcome and rightfully so for every space outside of women’s spaces is a man’s space. We have plenty of room whereas women are forced to find and create safe spaces. We hardly allow them room to breathe elsewhere.
Being trans does not mean we are incapable of being abusive. Being trans does not mean we know what it is like to exist in a male supremacist society as a woman. Some of us do; some of us don’t. My point is that it’s not inherent. When in relationships with women, it is on us too to make sure consent is present at all times. We too are capable of rape.
Trans men, we do not understand the experiences of trans women or of folks who also are gendered male at birth. Acting as though we do is taking part in transmisogyny and, therefore, also taking part in sexism. We don’t experience the same struggles as trans* folks who are gendered male at birth, and when we list off the plethora of trans women’s names during Trans* Day of Remembrance, let us take notice the monumental difference between how much space their struggles take on that list in comparison to ours for theirs is far greater.
Let us remember to move back and allow women to communicate their ideas for they are encouraged by us and by male supremacy to not do so. Let us remember that when taking part in trans* advocacy to include and encourage the inclusion the trans* folks who are gendered male at birth always. Let us not take part in urinary segregation nor in segregation of coercively given genders for these constructs limit the liberation of all people, not just trans* folks.
This could go on forever, but lastly, and potentially most importantly, let us recognize that we can always grow as allies to women and to CGMAB, non-binary, trans* folks. Let us recognize that we do not deserve cookies for not being rapists, for otherwise practicing good consent, for recognizing the existence of sexism and/or transmisogyny, or for not reclaiming words used against women (or for writing posts such as these). Remember to call out other men when you have the chance. Remember that it is not your place to dictate what is or is not sexist. Recognize your privilege and keep it in check.

Virtual Art Sessions
Google Chrome Experiment presents volumetric video captures of artists using the VR painting app Tiltbrush, which can be viewed in-browser:
youtube
Virtual Art Sessions is an experiment in virtual reality painting with Tilt Brush. The project partnered with six world-renowned artists bringing them a new way to paint, draw and sculpt. We recorded their sessions and made it accessible online, letting you observe the artists as they develop their virtual reality creations from any angle.
The project renders high volumes of data right in the browser. This includes point cloud data of the artist’s physical form, 3D geometry data of the artwork, and position data of the VR controllers. Using open source web technologies, we transformed that data into something that can be experienced by anyone using the web. No apps or plug-ins needed.
Virtual Art Sessions is open source. It’s a bit of a mess, so proceed at your own risk, but if you poke around enough, you’ll see how we created the entire project.
Very impressive project - try it out for yourself and find out more here
