Reflection
The thought of even writing nearly 4000 words was incredibly daunting at first. It’s one of those things where you struggle to see yourself finishing. But that’s before you even start it. But what I find all too often is that starting it is always the hardest part. Once you break that barrier, you find yourself on a roll (I do, anyway).
The good thing about this project is I was actually interested in the research I was conducting. It’s not often that you get to write about something almost completely of your choice.
I believe my exegesis offers good insight into the demolition of historic buildings and its effect, and how my design outcome appropriately addressed the issue with a user-centred website.

Improvements to Contextual Knowledge
• I improved my contextual knowledge by adding a section about my target audience
• Added images for reference
• For the case study, I cut out unnecessary info and added more appropriate info plus resolved the abrupt ending

Methodology
Given that this practice-led project involved collecting and exhibiting historical records in the form of a website, I decided to adopt a user-centric and historical inquiry.

Abstract
KEYWORDS: 5 words at the bottom of the abstract. E.g Printed media, Women’s health, Endometriosis, auto-ethnography
MOTIVATION: what made me do the project, what encouraged me to embark on the topic Problem - Personal experience
THESIS: anyone doing something similar, what is the current knowledge around your research? Look into claims that previous people have made on the topic. I can acknowledge what is already out there but then talk about how my piece is different.
RESULTS: How I can educate and help young women detect endo at a younger age? Or even just inform them.
CONCLUSION: Reiterates the thesis/claim. Explains how and why the thesis/claim/practice might be useful to others in the field. The impact of the work.

Reflections on Grade + Feedback
When I saw a C+ next to my name, I was a little taken back. But of course the feedback was helpful in communicating the decision behind that. It seems the main concern was the contextual knowledge para which ended abruptly. I recall when writing that I had just run out of time and also needed to allocate more time to studio. Essentially, I just made sure the main framework was there and of course I would not let the same happen for summative.
It was also mentioned that it would have been good to see some images which is understandable.
ultimately though, It was fairly positive feedback and I knew now what i needed to improve on and how I would go about completing this for summative.

Formative Feedback
Kia ora Dylan. Thank you for your efforts to write the positioning and the contextual review of your GRAD703 (Exegesis). This is a good start. Good explorations to link ideas and content, good writing attempts. I'm glad you’ve been able to reference properly and connect research. Your positioning section starts well. There’s also some good contextual knowledge, attributed properly. Your research title doesn’t have to make a large claim. The contextual part ends abruptly, you might need to think about how you can close that paragraph better. Would've been to see come contextual practice references, or work that other designers have done! Overall this is a good start! Keep it up.

Review of Contextual Knowledge
In class we tasked to read chapter two from a handful of exegesis’ given too us. I chosen Elena Panaita’s ‘Consideration of Upgraded gods’. My initial reaction was....confusion. The writing style felt very formal and not typical of something you would find me reading in my own time.
Discussing with others who read the same chapter validated this reaction. But we were also able to break it down together.
Although the topic didn't interest me personally, I walked away with a better understanding of the structure and content that was expected for contextual

Very interesting video essay on the Penn Station in New York
This will help me in my case study for my contextual document

Auckland City Archives
Visiting the Auckland Library and Auckland City Archives was a brilliant Idea. It gave me a whole lot of inspiration and helped me pivot my project to focus on the now demolished buildings of Auckland. Unfortunately, I got there too late so wasn’t able to find too many building plans but I will be making more visits.
Design Inspiration
I found that looking through the negatives of some of Auckland building plans also sparked an idea for a potential design outcome. I was able to draw from the geometric and angular aspect of the building plans along with incorporating the black and white to create a 3D version of a building.
I like the simplicity of this pictogram and see potential this to be turned into a design system and used to help establish a unique pictogram for each building.

Abstract
Helpful resources:\
https://artanddesign.aut.ac.nz/
https://bestawards.co.nz/
Title/ Subtitle: A subtitle can be used when the title doesn't explain it much.
Keywords: - A requirement to have at least 5 keywords (like hashtags). - Placed at the bottom of the abstract. - Sometimes, in our case, to think about our own project and 702 in general, the website has got categories which we will choose when we come to uploading our abstract.
Problem Statement: Introduces the topic and presents the main issue Motivation/Context/Problem Statement (one sentence) Motivation: What made me do this project or encouraged me to embark on this topic ~ this is where the positioning comes. Problem: Could be personal experience Thesis (one sentence) What are the current knowledge around you research?
It would be important for me to put my work in a certain frame or knowledge field.
e.g. if i were talking about cannabis, i could talk about the need for resources or communicating through younger generations, or motivating the younger generation to stop using cannabis.
Methodology (two sentences) Perhaps not necessary to include in abstract
Could talk about my questions, the ‘how’ of this. e.g. hand printed, hand-bound publication that includes collected bibliography of ____
If there is something that is not explicitly there, or i’ve photographed it, i can refer it to this and state i’ve taken these photos.
Results/ outcomes (one sentence) What’s your practice and how your practice will contribute to an area of knowledge
e.g. helping young females to understand Endo and to make an early detection
These are things I can add in my conclusion
Think about how I am making a difference.
Conclusion Reiterate the thesis/claim
Try to be as interesting and unique. Try to bring in a personal perspective. My experiences are unique to me. I could tell a bit of insight about the work.
careful not to say everything on the abstract.

Notable Buildings
International: Pennsylvania Station, New York
Auckland: - Victoria Arcade - His Majesty’s Arcade - NZ Herald Offices
I chose these buildings as they were all in fairly close proximity to each other which would make the design output easier. After researching some of the lost buildings in Auckland, I decided that theses were perhaps some of the most recognisable and significant buildings in the Auckland precinct.

Research Topic: A visual glimpse into the forgotten architecture in Auckland
Research Topic - Discussion: How does the destruction of architecturally significant buildings impact urban environments?
Research Topic - Discussion: After weeks of uncertainty, I was finally happy to land on a topic for my Cap Stone project. My research project will discuss the importance of architecture in the urban environment, and how the unnecessary demolition of some of the most historically and architecturally significant building affects that environment.
The research project will take more of a holistic approach into the topic of building demolitions as a whole, while my studio project will focus specifically on buildings that were demolished in Auckland

Positioning & Overview - Auckland Architecture
This page shows my writing process. You can see a lot of unfinished, broken up sentences, and no apparent structure. This is fine however as it is a way for me to get down all my thought processes. After which, I will restructure and tidy up the writing.
