Work Week 6 11/30
We’re nearing the end of what feels a long semester! Our “final” episode will be something of a two part deal so back to back episodes. The project plan has Shimabuku’s final sensei, Taira Shinken, and the cool Kobudo that was taught. After that, I wanted to make an official final episode to round out the series back with Shimabuku and the kata that he made himself. Anyway it’s going to be a busy few weeks so stay tuned!

Work Week 3 10/26
Some feedback from last week’s episode leads me to think I need to work on  a few things.
- An official Logo: I am the most excited for this as I really want to have something official to start each episode so I want to take a little more time to start making it.
- Reformat my intial episode plan: So a future episode I realized will give me trouble if I don’t make a plan for it now, so I’m going to have to reformat my project plan but it won’t affect the release schedule.
Because of all these changes, I am going to push back the release schedule for the next episodes by a week. So instead of the next episode being released November 5, it will be November 12.
So stay tuned for the next work week report next week.

Work Week 1 (9/28)
Hello! For those of you who are just joining this project, my name is Dylan Henry and I am going to be making a series on karate and it’s wonderful history. I think karate is an unspoken gem that really has changed my life in more ways then I could ever describe and this series is really just a way for me to show some of the coolest things that can come from it.
This past week, I have been talking with others from dojo and getting equipment that I will need in the coming weeks. I plan on filming this from home and making karate appear very feasible to pick from your own living room. The people I’ve talked to have been very insightful, giving me advice such as; what to wear, what subjects I could talk about, and more. I have picked up a small microphone so that I can film away from my laptop while not losing most of the quality I would otherwise.
I did some research for mics and I was tempted to get a lapel mic but I settled for the Samson Go Mic just to get started.
Tumblr media
I plan to have this be a bi-weekly series where I will spend one week writing and getting other people to make their content to show in the video and the final week to piece everything together and make the show.

Analysis: Blake Butler on writing the thing no one else can write
https://thecreativeindependent.com/people/writer-blake-butler-on-writing-the-thing-no-one-else-can-write/
This piece really stuck out to me because it kind of related to what I was trying to do in my senior project. I think writing about something unique can be very tricky and I think that what he’s saying about art being a victim of consumerism holds true in a lot of ways. It’s why I’m a bit nervous to be doing this project since I feel like karate is something that people usually write off as a pastime. Even with it not being as popular as I would like it would be, I hope that my project can be illuminating not just for other people, but for myself as well.

On how to grow an idea
After reading the article, I think that I agree with what the writer has to say about projects in general. The best ones seem to be the projects that make themselves rather than the projects that are either forced into being. It seems counter intuitive, but I think it makes a lot of sense. In general, I’ve found that people will always want to be doing the least amount of work possible, so this might be an explanation as to why projects that are forced can feel inauthentic or difficult to grow.
As for Jenny Odell’s Work, the two projects I found interesting were; The Breathing Shape and the Year Long Observation of Earth. Both of these involve breathing, but both do it in pretty imaginative ways.
For the Breathing Shape, I think it’s interesting because a shape is almost never portrayed as a living thing. Having it “breathe” is pretty clever because geometrically, all shapes have an ascending order of how big they are. Except for the line to a triangle, we have a pretty standard system of shapes that differ from one another by adding one angle. So it’s interesting to see this kind of system portrayed as one shape that is “breathing” and growing over time.
As for the other project, well I think it’s obvious I have an interest in seeing things that are usually more inanimate being portrayed as living things. The Earth is something we should all be very familiar with, and seeing as a breathing thing should help encourage people that it is beautiful thing that should be preserved.

Week 1 - Research Diet
1. Some Good News
Tumblr media
For my video series I plan on doing, I wanted to take some inspiration from more recent series that were pretty successful. I think an SGN style approach could be good for karate news since I could focus on some really cool aspects that people tend to over look.
2. Last Week Tonight
Tumblr media
A more informational series could be boring if I don’t add some humor to it, so what other could I have chosen for inspiration? Last Week Tonight continues to be a show I always look to not only for some weekly news, but also just to have a good laugh as the host is never shy from having a good laugh at himself.
3. Drunk History
Tumblr media
This was a show that was actually recommended to me by some friends of mine for this project and I have to say it might be fun to see if it works. Obviously I wouldn’t be getting drunk during my show, but I think the layout of the show could be interesting to follow through with as I could have friends of mine film themselves doing karate and then I can put that extra spin that makes it humourous.
