since there are 2 interpretations of hori's words right now, what are your thoughts on his answer to the "does ochako confess" question? is he being passive aggressive and poking fun at those in denial or is he being noncommittal and just trying to not rock the boat too much after the 431 fallout?
Interpretations my ass. Horikoshi literally says, "42巻を読んで想像していただければ / If you kindly read volume 42 and imagine it." That's his response. Emphasis on the if, for those who didn't realize that was there. Someone just decided "imagine it" means "use your brain," which it doesn't. They're different words. And it's an answer given in a very polite form. This is Horikoshi saying "If it does happen, it happens after volume 42, but I'm not going to write it or give any details (probably because, as I've expressed before, I have little confidence in my ability to write romance), so if it's something you want then please imagine it for me because that would probably be the better version. Also I'd like to leave this as open to interpretation as possible (probably because of all the backlash I got for chapter 431 in the first place)."

you've probably already answered this a million times but what do you think about katsuki's arc post apology? that's about where I stopped following the manga back then as a huge fan of him and after catching up I'm conflicted. on one hand it was my personal theory he'd end up defeating potatohead AFO so I was satisfied with that but the kurogiri bit was just weird and the "closure" we got with him and Deku left so much to be desired (not talking about the epilogue chapters, I mean their little talk in 424.) as a katsuki nerd I liked it but Hori continued to show the impact of the bullying more from the bully's POV than the victims and I feel like Deku's feelings continue to be unexplored in such an unsatisfying way....
Post-apology was Katsuki's arc of coming to terms with his inferiority complex and achieving the strength needed to stand by Izuku's side as an ally. I liked all that just fine. In fact, it was the highlight of the final arc for me. Most everything else I was kinda meh about lol.
Sure, it's easy to pick out little things, but I don't see how Horikoshi's inability to properly close out Kurogiri has any impact on Katsuki's arc. That moment was clearly not about Katsuki. It was weird as hell though, but so were a lot of things about the way Horikoshi tried to tie up loose ends. That doesn't make those things part of Katsuki's arc though.
I admittedly did not like how the hospital scene went between Katsuki and Izuku. I thought a lot was left out for stupid reasons, and I was in shock when it was published. But just because it lacked the things I wished it included doesn't mean that I disliked what we did get. It just felt like we needed more. I don't feel that closure in every sense is required, but I do feel that some promises made by the narrative were not kept.
As for the bullying, you've lost me there. I've explained before that the lens through which a lot of the western fandom views the bullying in MHA is irrelevant to me. Katsuki isn't THE bully, he's one of many bullies. And the idea that we only saw the impact of the bullying on him and not on Izuku only exists if we assume Izuku's feelings about the bullying were not explored. They were. He just isn't upset and traumatized by it in the way a lot of people seem to think he should be. That dissatisfaction in the fandom only exists because people think Izuku should feel differently than he does. But Izuku doesn't think or act on behalf of his own victimhood in any situation of his life, even when he would be entirely justified in doing so. To do so would be to protect his ego, and Izuku is a character who constantly sacrifices his ego for the sake of others. He only acts on behalf of the wrongs that he perceives are done to others, never himself. That's why we never see him express any hurt feelings about it. That's why the feelings we do see him express about it are gratitude and forgiveness when his friendship with Katsuki is restored. That's why we see Katsuki trying to cope with the guilt of how Izuku will never hold him accountable for his past actions in their relationship. It's because he knows that's how Izuku is.

i just read your post on the “one for all couldnt keep you in the ground” line the other day and LOVED it, but i just saw an image from the eng volume release and they did indeed revise it! it now says “one for all couldnt handle you alone… so i’m here to step in and finish the job!”
i think overall this is kinda the best of both worlds? after reading your analysis, i wish they kept the “we”, but otherwise the callback to the previous times he said the line is stronger now and the “finish the job” at the very end as a punch is very cool and strong! would love to hear your thoughts!
tumblr user frogiwi you have made my fucking day
thank you. thank you so much for this ask.
Let me just say: I argued first and foremost that both singular and plural readings of Katsuki's pronoun are valid. I felt compelled to defend a "we" reading because everyone wanted to shit on it and dismiss it for various reasons, and I felt that was unfair and discounted the importance of the kocchi pronoun specifically.
I'm not sorry for defending it, because it meant I got to express a lot of things I have wanted to say about Japanese and languages in general. In doing so, I also got to relive Katsuki's journey to belonging in that "we," and that meant a lot to me. I hope it meant a lot to some of you, as well. It makes me really happy to hear you were swayed by my perspective.
I'm not bothered by this singular reading. I also argued that the leaker's "I'm the guy" isolated Katsuki in a way that a simple "I'm" would not, and this is a perfect example of that.
The main mitigating factor here is "alone."
Looking at my translation alternatives--
You can see that I tried to include "handle," "here to step in," and "alone" in some combination; the first two achieve most direct callback, but "alone" refers both to Katsuki's 323 "handle it all alone" and it emphasizes the collective.
Because exactly as I said, Katsuki talks about One For All (and by extension, Izuku) like it's a weapon in their collective arsenal, and if its firepower alone ain't enough, then Katsuki PERSONALLY is a bomb ready to go off for the cause. Izuku and Katsuki are in this together.
One thing I trimmed from my lengthy post about 405 is that kocchi is sometimes used in ways that feel smug, petty, or sarcastic, like "hahaha I'm on THIS SIDE and you're not, loser! neener neener!" I tried to express it by saying that Katsuki is rubbing it in AFO's face that he and Izuku both belong to something greater than themselves, but there really is a layer to it that's like Mirio's "you've never had any friends!" burn on Shigaraki. This revision captures that energy.
You said it best, friend. This is the best of both worlds.
"One For All couldn't keep you in the ground" was fucking metal, but in the end, I am truly happy to have a loud and clear callback to Katsuki's promise to Izuku.
