Quote
There is a reason that most fanfiction authors, specifically girls, start with a Mary Sue. It’s because girls are taught that they are never enough. You can’t be too loud, too quiet, too smart, too stupid. You can’t ask too many questions or know too many answers. No one is flocking to you for advice. Then something wonderful happens. The girl who was told she’s stupid finds out that she can be a better wizard than Albus Dumbledore. And that is something very important. Terrible at sports? You’re a warrior who does backflips and Legolas thinks you’re THE BEST. No friends? You get a standing ovation from Han Solo and the entire Rebel Alliance when you crash-land safely on Hoth after blowing up the Super Double Death Star. It’s all about you. Everyone in your favorite universe is TOTALLY ALL ABOUT YOU. I started writing fanfiction the way most girls did, by re-inventing themselves. Mary Sues exist because children who are told they’re nothing want to be everything.

Charles, her heel in his hand, caught the glass between thumb and forefinger and pulled gently. Camilla caught her breath in a quick, wincing gasp. Charles drew back like he’d been scalded. He made as if to touch her foot again, but he couldn’t quite bring himself to do it. His fingertips were wet with blood. “Well, go on,” said Camilla, her voice fairly steady. “I can’t do it. I’m afraid I’ll hurt you.” “It hurts anyway.” “I can’t,” Charles said miserably, looking up at her.

Modern Mythology: Hestia
“Is it possible for home to be a person and not a place?”
A modern Hestia and with one glance into her eyes, you would think you were returning home. There is a fire there, in her eyes, but it holds no malice or pain, it’s flames belong on firewood, it’s warmth fogging the windows of a living room, flickering to the beat of laughter and sighs. She is felt everywhere when one is at home, let it be in another’s eyes or in the pages of a story, she is the warming of one’s heart and the widening of their soul, until one stands on top of this world, and she is the one that whispers to the people of this world that they deserve something to call their own, and to know that it will not always be beautiful. She walks the streets, especially when the light is dim, to remind the world that home will never be far from their grasp, and if they do not have one or do not know one with peace, she will show them the way to a hearth worthy of their love, let it be an arm for them to hold, a bed all their own, a story to love, or simply the wind in their hair as their skin knows the flames she holds in her eyes.

Literature Meme - {1/5 Genres} Gothic fiction
Gothic fiction, which is predominantly, though by no means limited to, Gothic horror is a genre made popular in the late 18th Century. It combined features of fiction, horror and Romanticism, creating a genre which is still prominent in modern literature as well as theatre and film. Gothic fiction of the Romantic and Victorian era is considered so popular today due to developments in literature (the printing press) and the mass-circulation of books through the era. Futhermore, due to the increase of female writers during this time, the Gothic is a genre dominated by female writers, such as the Bronte sisters, Ann Radcliffe and Daphne duMaurier.
Gothic fiction is heavily inspired by Gothic revival architecture, as well as the Romantic ideas of the supernatural, Medieval past, and nature, in particular strong emotions such as awe and terror as a result. Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto is considered the first Gothic novel. Other notable works include Dracula, Frankenstien and Wuthering Heights. The features and themes presented and explored in Gothic novels are clear in popular literature today. Vampires, werewolves and the supernatural make up a large part of young adult literature, as well as elements of the Gothic being found in other mediums, such as comics, films, TV and music.

modern myths: stranded angels
Angels who walk up to the Pearly Gates (laughing at jokes they learnt from humans), push on them, find them locked. Angels who try to fly for the first time in millenia and find their wings have atrophied. Angels so busy partying with mortals that they don’t hear the last trumpet calling them home.

Emily Jean Stone // Losing my anonymity was something that I could never really prepare myself for. I think I struggled with it for a bit because one of my favourite things is just to walk around and interact with people. It was hard to get used to not being able to do that and I sort of kept myself inside more. But now I feel like I’m coming into an adjustment period. Maybe I thought I was supposed to live up to something or be a certain way but now I don’t feel that way as much. I still think about what people think of me, of course, but I don’t feel as bogged down by it now. (insp)

It's a very Greek idea, and a very profound one. Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it. The Secret History, Donna Tartt
