My interpretation of Sunset Shimmer 🔥 no Equestria Girls here, sorry folks…

Sunset Shimmer was born of Queen Celestia’s desire for an heir. The Queen devised a spell that would enable her to create a daughter from her own magic—no mate required. However, the spell was flawed: without the essential component of love, it created an unstable clone rather than a daughter.

Sunset Shimmer was born an Earth pony, but the magic that created her was uncontrollable, resulting in raging tantrums and a fiery mane. She was deemed a failed experiment by Canterlot and although Queen Celestia tried to treat her well, she could only see the worst of herself made manifest. She could not bring herself to love Sunset Shimmer no matter how she tried.

Her daughter grew spiteful and cruel, acting out in desperation for love. Eventually, after badly burning one of Queen Celestia’s students, she fled to the Dragon Lands, never to be seen again… or is she?

Poor Sunset Shimmer. I really love a ‘evil but trying to be good’ clone, a la Fern from Adventure Time.

Here’s what I think growing up in a dark cave and only having river water would do to tsunami :)

Ik that technically none of this would make sense in real life, and this type of evolution would only take place after a long time BUT A GIRL CAN DREAM OK.

Just some headcannons that I think would make her more diff and interesting

Ok but this is actually a thing! It has do do with nature vs nurture

It can boil down to two different things: epigenetics and environmental factors, which is displayed here.

Epigenetics refers to how under certain environmental pressures, different genes will be expressed; eg clownfish switching genders

The latter, environmental factors can influence how a species evolve, for sure, but can also change the appearance of some phenotypes. Think something like paler people tanning in sunnier areas

It’s genuinely not a stretch to assume this could be a combination of both factors

AAAH HC THAT RAINWINGS GAIN THEIR BASE/DEFAULT COLOURS BY THEIR EARLY EMOTIONS

like if one had a really neglected and lonely childhood they would turn out kinda blue and grey as their default colours. And if a rainwing had a pretty happy childhood they would generally be very yellow and pink.

I feel like after glory took over as queen, she would have inforced some rules, and one of them would be rainwing eggs have to be kept by parents, clear families began emerging, and colours became different.
