Young Artists Display Their Works at SUNY Broome
Students showed off their creativity as well as their art skills on Friday at the Pop-up Gallery and Open Studio at SUNY Broome. Art was hung throughout the hallways in the second floor of the Science Building. The artists included were those in the beginning drawing and beginning painting classes.
According to Professor and Event Coordinator David Zeggert, pieces chosen for the gallery were those that were “…pleasing and represented the projects in the classroom.” This included focuses on fabric, composition, as well as portraits.  For the students, “It means a lot to them. There was a lot of interest and excitement…”, stated Zeggert.
To get a perspective from one of the student artists, I asked Megan Wendt what it felt like to have her art out for the public, “…part of you is like I want to take it home, but the other part of you doesn’t want it not to be looked at.” Wendt also answered about whether or not she was glad the event was held, “Yeah, art students need a lot more recognition…”
Event attendee and student Olivia Kristek was only one of many who stopped by to check out some art, “There were a lot of pieces that really spoke out to me…”. It wasn’t only students who showed up though, friends along with family also made their way to the campus to appreciate the pieces. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a lot more people that attend next year.”, stated Kristek.
Included in the event was also an open studio, a free and social experience. It allows those in class the chance to catch up on their projects while also inviting family to work on their art skills. “The atmosphere of the studio is not like in the classroom, people can come and go as they please, and there is a lot interaction between students and others.”, stated Zeggert. This was not the only open studio though, there will be many more in the upcoming weeks.

The Long Drought is Over, Finally
When a fan’s team wins a major sport’s championship, they can’t help but become incredibly excited. For a local boy in Broome County, the 2017 Super Bowl was one of the best days of his life. Dylan Cappello, who is currently a student at Windsor Central High School, was celebrating a feat his team had never accomplished.
Cappello had been watching the Eagles ever since he was seven years old. He was pulled into the team watching his favorite NFL player Desean Jackson. Jackson was a wide receiver that played for the Eagles from 2008 to 2013. Cappello said that he “loved his explosiveness, he was just a great playmaker”. Even though Jackson left the Eagles in 2013, Cappello still rooted for Philadelphia, hoping that one day they’d be at the top of the league.
When I asked Cappello about the beginning of the 2017 season and his expectations for his team, he “… felt confident because they showed they had it in them, they would always put up a fight and battle.” Battle they did as they secured the number one seed in the NFC for the first time since 2004 with a 13 and 3 record. They battled their way through the playoffs and won the NFC championship against the Vikings and secured their ticket to the Super Bowl.
February 4th, 2018 is a date that Cappello will always remember, Super Bowl LII. The game pitted the Eagles vs. the New England Patriots who were coming off a championship a year prior. Cappello believed that “They had a slight chance.  When Carson Wentz went down, I didn’t have too much faith, but I had a gut feeling they’d win.” Wentz went down with an ACL injury in week 14 of the season after having an MVP caliber season. This left Nick Foles to take over as quarterback for the team. He had experience with the Eagles and the playoffs, but many wrote him off as not being a very good quarterback.
Foles lead the Eagles to a halftime lead of 22 to 12 against the Patriots, leaving many shocked. Of course, Cappello was one of these viewers and said that “If after the half the Eagles didn’t make any mistakes, they’d win. You can’t give the Patriots any chances.” These same Patriots had pulled of a comeback the year before, coming back from a deficit of 28 to 3 against the Falcons in Super Bowl LI, so no lead was safe.
The Eagles, though losing the lead late in the game, made a comeback for themselves winning their first Super Bowl 41 to 33. Cappello’s first reaction? Complete Shock. “I couldn’t believe it, they’ve never won it before, it didn’t feel real.” Cappello, like all Eagles fans, was ecstatic, jumping into the cold February snow, because at that point, he was overcome with adrenaline. It was certainly one of the best times that he’s had as an Eagles fan, and he hopes that there will be many more like that night in the future.

Buccaneers take down Philly
Eagles struggle without their starters, can’t finish the comeback. The Eagles lost their first game of the season to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-21. It all started on the first play for the Buccaneers, A 75 yard touchdown pass to ex-Eagle Desean Jackson. From that point on, the game looked grim for the Eagles. At one point, the Eagles were down 27-7, this after injuries to Jay Ajayi, Mike Wallace, and Jason Peters (Not to mention that Darren Sproles, Alshon Jeffery, and Carson Wentz had already been injured previously). What didn’t help them either was the penalties, though just six in total, they at one point had a 2nd and 40 that gave them no chance on their second drive. The defense struggled during the first half allowing 20 points, but they settled down and held Tampa Bay to only 7 in the second. The offense, while missing key players, picked up in the second half as well, scoring 14 points. What could have been a great comeback fell short as the Eagles couldn’t stop the Bucs offense with 2:41 left in the game, letting them wind the clock down to 28 seconds. At that point, there was little to no chance of the comeback as when the Eagles got the ball, laterals and backward passes lead to a fumble recovery by Tampa Bay with no time left. The Eagles record is now 1-1 as they head back to Philadelphia to host the Indianapolis Colts, and with Carson Wentz being reactivated for the first time since week 14 of last year, they hope to be over .500 once again.
