verso clair obscur characterization things that are gonna haunt me. (endgame spoilers below)
-perfectionism is literally his main mechanic.
-he literally cut himself in half just to get a laugh out of the party and it very specifically hurt. and he did this when he barely knew them. the way it implies that both versos really would try to please people even if it hurt them
-the way his parents very clearly wanted him to be A Painter. but he only made one canvas and that canvas is filled with pianos and trains and music. the way even aline's memory of her son, despite all her wishes for him to be a painter, repeatedly emphasizes his dislike
-the way renoir remembers him as the master of Lies and Masks. the way aline remembers painted verso as someone who consistently lied to everyone, to protect them from harsh truths.
and when you combine that with the former two- you get this picture of a man who is desperately eager to please. who knows what people expects and tries to fulfill those expectations with lies if he can't manage to make the truth happen- and he still tries.
-the way painted verso will never age. and neither will original verso.
i also just think a lot about how that piece of verso's soul that aline and maelle were both fully willing to destroy themselves for is just. this tired kid trying to Paint because that's what his family wants for him. (though i do think all the versos loved this world in their own way. like i had this click halfway through the game where i was like 'oh my god esquie is verso's winnie the pooh there's no way he isn't'. and like. painted verso had great times with monoco and had genuinely nice things to say about the places they had been. and i think painted verso loved the party. he just- couldn't stay. and couldn't let them stay at the cost of everything original verso had died to save) (and the added layer of painted verso putting on original renoir's mask at the very end and using maelle's father's words at the very end if you pick the verso ending. could he bear to tell her the full truth? that he couldn't watch her use the very piece of original verso she was ostensibly trying to save to make an omelas out of this world. would it be easier for her to just pretend to be the harsh father who doesn't Understand?)

Gossip girlies ❤️
So Verso and Monoco has 1) spend decades together in the snow mountain 2) do each other hair 3) Snuggle (LITTLE SPOON? OBVIOUSLY?) 4) skip the queue to resurrect their son together 5) also got beaten up by a strong and beautiful woman 6) leave the camp together and come back covered in blood and dirt 7) fight each other (normal behavior) 8) support each other's hobbies (me when I lie Verso and certified feet collecter Monoco)

Love this game cause like, you can chose to limit Verso’s suffering, or you can cause like five more life-shattering events if you want to.
You have to kill both his parents, but he’s made peace with that. You have to end a world full of sentient people, but he’s at peace. Fighting Maelle sucks, but he’ll do it. The betrayal on Lune’s face is terrible, Sciel’s acceptance worse. But he’s prepped for that.
What he hasn’t prepped for: Watching his little sister die by the hand of a girl who looks just like her, his older sister offing herself in front of him, killing his brother in law and oldest friend, listening to the journal entry where his girlfriend prepared to kidnap and torture him, three seconds later you can listen to his old lament over killing her because he didn’t want them unpainted —something he no longer wants so he killed the woman he loved for ultimately nothing— and then right there at the end when he has his chance at freedom you can restrict him to another lifetime of torment he didn’t want while Alicia slowly ends her life.
You can either go minimal with adding to Verso’s torment or just completely fuck this man’s life up more than it already is and while terrible is a little funny to me

Probably a lukewarm take at best, but I don't really think Verso was gunning for the complete destruction of the canvas until after Maelle killed Alicia. Accepted that the death of Lumière was the outcome? Yeah, definitely. But the rest of the Canvas is still alive. The gestrals and Nevrons are still living their lives.
But then at the end, he's on Renoir and Clea's side of the debate, even if he's still by 33's side physically. The Canvas needs to go. And I don't think that's a conscious choice he makes until he's holding the petals that used to be his sister. The look on his face as he stares up at a completely passive Maelle is nothing but pure betrayal and pain (and many kudos to the devs, the detail on these characters' expressions is insane), and that's the face of a man who's decided it all needs to go.

quietly going insane about clair obscur (i went back to the cutscenes and the visage boss fight to compare who ended up with which mask) sciel - determination
verso - doubt
lune - confidence
maelle - anxiety
and monoco? monoco just has his own mask. good for him

firm believer that lune and sciel should have romanced each other instead of verso and just come to him for relationship advice or to gush about each other

Did Sciel's story broke me completely?
Yes.
Did I come back from the dead? Also yes, because I'm finally finishing my degree
