Mark: Hi, it’s Mark from Top Local Lead Generation and we’re here with Mr. Bernie Pawlik of Pawlik Automotive - they basically win Vancouver’s Best Auto Repair every year. Bernie how’re you doing today?
Bernie: I’m doing really well.
Mark: So 16 time winners now. So we’re going to talk about disc brakes, what parts need to be replaced so brake pads need to be replaced but is that all that needs to be replaced in brakes?
Bernie: No, there’s a lot more to disc brakes than just the pads, although frequently people associate brake pad replacement with the item to do and there’s a number of reasons as it’s the most commonly known part and even some fancy European cars they’ll even have a dash display that’ll tell you your brake pads are worn out. So brake pads are just part of it. I’m going to show a picture of a full disc brake system here so you can see what is involved with replacement - you should be looking at the picture now - are we Mark?
Mark: Yep
Bernie: Ok, so there’s a picture I pulled off the internet compliments of Browns Alignment which I believe is in North Carolina just to given them credit. This is a picture, an illustration of the disc brake system and the brake pads you can see on the bottom right corner, they’ve put arrows and marked the brake pads. Now what they do is they squeeze, they are squeezed against the brake rotor, this is a big disc which rotates with your wheel, in the illustration where it shows wheel studs, that is where your wheel bolts onto the car. so the rotor is rotating with the wheel, the pad squeeze against the brake rotor and they’re squeezed by the brake calliper, which is indicated just sort of half way up on the picture on the right hand side. Inside the brake calliper there is a piston that’s, this is a simple brake calliper it just has one piston, and it squeezes agains the brake pads - there are a couple of parts that aren’t marked here. There’s slider pins which are just, you can see sort of a hollow section just at the top of the brake caliber, that silver rod going through it, that’s the slider pin and those are a critical part of the brake system which we’ll talk about later as well. So there’s the calliper, the pads and rotors which rotate with the wheels, but the pads wear out, they’re a softer material, they’re a softer friction type of material. A lot of engineering goes into the brake pads to eliminate squeaks and squeals and cause the right kind of braking grab. So that’s the brake pads. Rotors do wear as well, so rotors generally either need to be replaced with the brake pads or machined. But most of the time, probably 95% of the time, the rotors get replaced because they tend to wear quite quickly along with the brake pads. Modern brake pads are made of a very hard material and they tend to wear out the rotors.
Mark: So I guess I just can’t change the pads then?
Bernie: Well, the answer is if you’re doing your own brake job you can pretty much do anything you want but what goes into a quality brake job is assessing the condition of everything. When the pads wear out, it’s important to measure the rotors, there’s a certain specification on how thick the rotors are allowed to be, but if there’s any wear grooves in the rotors which again, 98% of the time there is, the brake pads don’t sit properly when you put them in. Yes you can put them in and they’ll work, but they won’t work as well as they could and they won’t last as long as they should and it leaves a lot of possibilities of squeaks, squeals, grinding noises as well. The brake callipers also do need service from time to time and again depending on the condition of the vehicle when it’s newer they generally don’t give any concern but when it’s older there can be problems with the brake callipers too which can impede when just changing the brake pads. So a quality brake job requires servicing and or replacing the rotors as well.
Mark: So how often do the callipers need replacement?
Bernie: Well, that really depends on the vehicle. Generally I like to think that the callipers are good for two to three brake jobs. There are some shops that replace callipers every time they do brakes. There’s a theory that the heat generated by the brakes tends to harden the rubber in the calliper pistons and cause that to be a liability to need replacement and it’s maybe not a bad idea but it adds a lot of cost to a brake job. We’ve just found in our experience that callipers tend to last quite a lot longer. Also on some imported vehicles, take an AMG Mercedes when a brake calliper can be a thousand bucks and also a difficult part to find so it isn’t justified to replace it, except if it’s worn out. What happens to brake callipers is two things, because there’s a moving piston, the piston will seize up, there’s brake fluid behind the piston which has an affinity for water. If any moisture gets in there it’ll rust up and seize up, so that’s a common problem with callipers. Also the slider pins that I talked about earlier, if it has that, there are different designs of callipers, but if it has slider pins these can seize up as well, moisture can get in and cause them to seize up. So when we do a brake pad service or brake rotor replacement, we always take a calliper sliders apart, we clean and lubricate everything because the last thing you want is that to seize up some time down the road. You want the brakes to last as long as possible. That brings me to another thing to, some time we can talk about what parts need to be replaced in a disc brake job, sometimes you’l get a shake in your brakes. you put the brake pedal on and the steering wheel starts shaking and the car will vibrate, usually this is caused by warped front brake rotors and it’s not an uncommon issue. Now if the brake pads are really thick, say they’re 6 millimetres or thicker you can often get away with just replacing the brake rotors because the pads have still got a couple years of life left in them. Again it’s an assessed type of thing, we need to look at it and see, but if the pads are good just changing the rotors in this case can be a good thing to do. And I think that pretty much covers us for disc brake replacements.

Bernie: I’m doing well.
Mark: So what parts are replaced during a drum brake job?
Bernie: Excellent question, so drum brakes are quite a bit different than disc brakes which we talked about in our last hangout. Drum brakes they actually, instead of having a brake rotor and a brake pads they use brake shoes and a brake drum so I’ll just get right down to looking at some pictures because they say a picture is worth a thousand words. So I apologize, this is a very tiny little picture, about the best I could find but it shows, you see the brake drum and I know it’s small to look at, you might need to get your reading glasses or magnifiers out but the brake drum, that sits over the brake shoes and the wheel is bolted up to the brake drum so I’ll just move on past this picture. There’s an illustration basically of what is inside the brake drum, so these are stationary parts, they sit stationary, the drum rotates around the brake shoes. The brake shoes I’ve marked with the red arrows and these are a frictional material like a brake pad, they’re designed to wear out but they wear out at a slow rate so that’s, that’s the main component that wears out as they press against the brake drums so like a brake rotor which wears out over time, the drums also take abuse and wear and brake drums usually need to be machined or replaced. Usually with drum brakes we can machine them more frequently than with brake rotors, they tend to last longer, there’s often less at stake with drum brakes because most cars use drum brakes on the rear unless it’s a truck where there’s a lot of weight on the back. Drum brakes are really just to provide a very small amount of braking to a car but it’s important to keep the car stable and slow it down but they, they don’t take the abuse and wear that disc brakes do so we can often machine the drums, they often take very little wear but just machining them so there’s a nice smooth flat surface.
So some of the other parts that I’m pointing out in this illustration, the green arrow points to a very important component, that’s the wheel cylinder; now this is kind of like the caliper on a disc brake. The wheel cylinder actuates the brake, it’s connected to the master cylinder, there’s fluid flowing through it when you push the brake pedal, there’s pistons in the wheel cylinder that are forced out, they force the brake shoes against the brake drum and that’s what slows your car down. The yellow arrow points to the self-adjusting mechanism, these are different in many different type of brake systems but all, all disc, all drum brake systems with one exception which I’ll talk about later have self-adjusting mechanisms because as the brake shoes wear they have to travel further and further into the brake drum and if they don’t have a self-adjustment mechanism the brake pedal goes lower and lower to the floor eventually you may not have any brakes at all; so that’s why the self-adjustment mechanism is there. The blue arrows point to the brake hardware, these are springs, hold down pins and items that generally get replaced when we replace the brake shoes, they stretch and move all the time and tend to wear.
So those are the major components of the drum brake system and as I said the shoes wear most frequently along with the drums needing to be resurfacing or replacement.
Mark: So out of all these parts which need replacement?
Bernie: Well the brake shoes. Most commonly the items where the red arrows are pointing, the brake shoes will almost always need replacement. The blue arrow items the springs and hardware need replacement, the self-adjustors usually last a long time however, they do need, they do need servicing and that is a key component of any brake job that we do. We always take everything apart, we clean it, we lubricate it, because these parts move just subtly but it’s important that they have the proper lubrication.
Mark: There’s a black arrow there, you didn’t mention anything about that. What’s that pointing to?
Bernie: Yes, that, very good point. That’s the parking brake lever; so many, many drum brakes, most drum brakes are found on the rear of cars these days, they haven’t used drum brakes on the front of cars since probably the very early 70’s. So the parking brake is actually a mechanical system and it has cables that connect to the pedals or your lever that you pull in the car and that black arrow points to the lever that actually pulls the brake shoes so it just, it just mechanically pulls the brake shoes against the drums.
Mark: So is there any extra servicing needed for the parking brake?
Bernie: Yeah, so the parking brake, one thing we do with the brake inspections is actually inspect how the parking brake is working and when we take the drum off we actually move, pull the parking brake lever, push it to make sure the cables aren’t seized because the cables will seize up occasionally and that will cause the brake shoes to wear out but other than that it’s mostly just requires that the lubrication that we do with any brake service. Speaking of parking brakes there are a lot of vehicles that have four wheel disc brakes, we’ll use a drum brake exclusively for the parking brake and this is a much simpler than the illustration that you’re looking at in that it has the lever, it has the shoes and it has an adjustment mechanism but it does not have a wheel cylinder as it’s not hydraulically actuated so it’s a much simpler version than this, doesn’t need service very often, you know if you have a car that’s 10 years old you may never need to do a service on the parking brake, really depends on, we just generally look at these, if it needs to be serviced we do it or if there’s some problem with the brake then we’ll replace it.
