Erlangen is a city located in the German state of Bavaria. It’s part of the broader region known as Franconia. This area is rich in history and culture, so much so that UNESCO has designated several sites here as World Heritage Sites. Even with its rich background, Erlangen isn’t one of many small towns you might be familiar with. Rather, it’s a scenic city that stands out among other places in Europe due to its unique history and modern attractions.
The History of Erlangen
The history of Erlangen is a fascinating one. The city was established in 1602, but it owes a lot of its growth to the Industrial Revolution. During this time, there was a dramatic increase in the number of textile factories in the city. However, this growth was short-lived, as the city suffered major damage in both the First and Second World Wars. In the years following the wars, the city was rebuilt and repurposed as a university town, as it is today. If you’re interested in the history of Erlangen, a great place to start is at the Erlanger Theater. This is one of the oldest theaters in Germany, and it has been operating since 1803. Another great place to visit is the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. While Erlangen isn’t home to just one university, but two. These two universities are home to more than 25,000 students, almost all of whom speak English, making it very easy for English speakers to navigate the city.
Things to Do in Erlangen
Tumblr media
The Erlangen Bamboo Forest: One of the best things to do in Erlangen is to visit the Erlangen Bamboo Forest. This fascinating attraction covers some 2,700 square meters, making it one of the largest bamboo gardens in all of Europe. When I was there, I felt like I was in Cambodia. Here, visitors can learn about the history and cultivation of bamboo, as well as visit a cafe.
The House of Prayer: As you may have guessed, this is not your typical house of prayer. Rather, it’s a fascinatingly unique church that was built in the 1930s by the architect Bruno Paul. It’s a small and unpretentious building that many people miss when visiting the city. If you’re a fan of architecture, this is a must-see when in Erlangen.
The Franconian Museum: This museum houses a collection of things that are representative of life in Franconia, which is where Erlangen is located. Major pieces in this collection include an Egyptian mummy, as well as an impressive collection of old automobiles.
Where to Eat in Erlangen
There are a variety of excellent restaurants in Erlangen, but these are our three favorites:
Haxn: Haxn is a Scandinavian-inspired restaurant that serves excellent dishes and drinks. The restaurant is located right in the center of Erlangen, making it easy for tourists to find and enjoy.
La Senorita: La Senorita is an excellent Mexican restaurant located in the city center. The best part about this restaurant is that it offers a menu that’s both in German and Spanish. This makes it easy for tourists to order something delicious, and it also shows the city’s commitment to diversity.
Café Aquarium: This is an excellent place to get both coffee and cake, as well as light meals. The cafe is located very close to the Bamboo Forest, making it an excellent place to visit before or after your trip there.
Best Time to Visit Erlangen
You can visit Erlangen any time of year, but the best time to visit is between April and October. This is because the weather is warm but not overly hot, making it comfortable to explore the city. In addition, this time of year is also when many of the city’s festivals take place. If you visit outside of this time frame, you’ll likely find that there are fewer tourists in the city. However, this also means that there will be fewer events and festivals taking place.
Is Erlangen Worth the Trip?
Absolutely. Erlangen is a scenic city that boasts a surprising history. Add to this its modern attractions, such as the two universities, and you have a place that’s worth the trip.
