Experimentation, beginners mind, and trying new things
For an upcoming gig, the thing is going to live in the box and be played via MIDI controller hardware, thus begins the process of building things in software
This is actually a really radical shift coming from hardware, so it's really interesting to see how all of those patterns and techniques from the hardware world translate
It's uncomfortable, and that's awesome
To start things out, here's a clip on an initial evolving drone bed for the piece
Greetings from the wasteland of cables and strewn about bits
The MIDI upgrade has gone surprisingly smoothly, swapping out an ancient MOTU MTPAV for a shiny new Conductive Labs MRCC- a very nicely thought out piece of kit
The goal here (in addition to replacing some dying hardware) was to better integrate the MIDI tone modules with the modular, and it's working very nicely
This is just a small chunk of the amazing NX5R (always forget what a fantastic module this is) taking a sequence from an Eloquencer, going back through some signal mangling, and with a light accompaniment from a Spectraphon
Simple and lots of fun- this will be great to play with
More work on the past patch, adding some more textures and layers- now to let it rest and cure for a while and see what story it has to tell when it wakes up again
Took a few days off to decompress after a rough February and to welcome Spring
Something must have unjammed in the ether, since this came out perky and bouncy, but still a bit charming- we'll see what more roads this patch can go down
The lovely people at GIVE/TAKE have something wonderful for you today. The latest Group Exhibition 004 compilation is now available, featuring deliciously dark entries from genre-spanning legends and soon-to-be legends.
Exclusive tracks and mixes, previews of things to come, and fantastic singles are all here-but this time with a twist.
Previously, these exclusive compilations were only available in a physical form when purchasing other physical items, but for the first time this one is being offered digitally- and all for FREE.
Hope you made it through January with your spirits intact. The warms will be returning soon, but while it's still dark and cold, we are very pleased to announce the new lcn1 EP, "A Cure For Wellness".
We had the absolute honor to be able to contribute a remix of the title track for this one, and it's truly a wonderful release all the way through.
Evoking classic industrial sounds of NIN while bringing unexpected turns, unique textures, and strange techniques to create something fresh and new, this is a fabulous release.
The world is utterly fucked at the moment, there's nothing to be offered that will solve any of the nightmares, but here's a little bit of something uptempo to perhaps tap some toes.
Autumn is here, the switch was finally thrown and the ridiculous heat for most of September is gone and we are left with a landscape that doens't quite match the weather and a bit of whiplash.
Not so different from the past months. Lots of projects and deadlines, and…honestly, it was time to decouple and take a bit of a break. The creativity was just not flowing well, and time in the studio was becoming more work, less meditation. Same with social media- it can't be overstated how miserable the social media experience is, yet here we all are.
Anyway, time away was taken. Badly needed time.
And now, coming back into the studio for the first time in a very long time with nothing to do but explore sound and knobs, and it was lovely. It feels wonderful to be able to be back in a purely creative moment that is free of commitments and timelines.
So here's a bit of that moment, swinging back towards our alternate artistic axis.
Pleased to share a new remix with everybody for our good friend Dissociate on GIVE/TAKE. Their "Opt Out" release was really a favorite this year so it was an absolute honor to be able to participate and finally return the favor of the remix they provided for "Zoom Team" on "Ripple" last year.
The wonky vibe of "Neurological Misfire" had a really lovely groove to it, so the approach here was to try to both accentuate and wrange that.
Give the whole album a listen- it's a remarkable collection of artists and interpretations of some really wonderful tracks. A real pleasure and privilege to be able to contribute here.
Summer is slowly winding down, for better or worse.
Lots to do, but felt it was important to take some time again to just see where the wires led. Today turned out to be pretty calm and mellow, here's a small chunk.
There are a few more projects in the works and there are studio tech tasks to be done, but a good balance and rhythm between all of that is still developing. Multitasking and multithreading is still a big challenge, need to develop those "shifting gears muscles" a bit more.
Hope you all are staying hydrated and safe. Keep going back to a WSB quote - "How does it feel to be one of the last human beings? A gray shadow on a distant wall…"
Finally, a day without any deadlines. So many things to get to in the studio, but rejiggering the MIDI and tying the old Korgs into the modular got to the top of the list this time. To celebrate, here's a little dark drony sludge. Still some clocking to sort out, but the whole clocking/reset scheme needs some minor tweaks anyway, so that's going to be a task for next week (along with some case maintenance and other tech stuff).
It's nice to have some time to just aimlessly turn knobs again, though that's not going to last long. A few more things to announce soon.
