Transmission tower maintenance tips
India’s power requirement is going to be 1650.59 billion units by 2023. Transmission towers play a very important role in fulfilling the growing needs. Transmission towers support the high-voltage conductors of overhead power lines. Some of the common transmission towers that are commonly seen in India are:
●      Monopoles
●      Lattice towers
●      High mast poles
Tumblr media
Why is hot rolled steel preferred for transmission towers?
Transmission towers are usually made of hot rolled steel. Hot rolled steel is preferred for transmission towers because they have greater mechanical strength, longer life, and permit the use of longer spans. But over a period of time the transmission towers are bound to have  some wear and tear so they need proper maintenance. Here are some of the important transmission tower maintenance tips:
Timely washing of  insulators:
The salt in the air or acid rains can decrease the efficiency of  parts of transmission towers which are required for uninterrupted power supply. Increased insulator pollution is another major issue faced by the transmission towers. When insulators are dry, there is no decrease in the strength of insulation but when the insulators are wet, the contaminated surface forms a conductive layer over it which can lead to electricity leakage. In this case, line-live washing is used to avoid any malfunctioning of the transmission line.
If transmission lines are in cold areas, timely removal of ice is necessary:
It is normal for the windward side of the transmission lines to get covered with ice. One of the best ways followed by many countries is to stop the operation of one of the operating towers, this prevents the condensation of ice over the transmission line. If there is still ice over them, increasing the temperature of the transmission lines can help in melting the snow.
Removal of corrosion or using methods to prevent corrosion:
High humidity can cause corrosion, which can affect the efficiency of the towers. Painting the towers with corrosion resistant paint is an effective way to prevent corrosion. Galvanised steel can also be used in the manufacturing to prevent corrosion.
Timely ground survey:
Ground survey can help in surveying the lower parts of the transmission tower. If any problem is discovered, it can be fixed immediately by maintenance personnel. Aerial surveys can be conducted using drones or helicopters to check the upper portions of the transmission tower.
Grid hardening method:
One of the other important strategies is grid hardening. Under this the older worn out parts will be replaced with the newer parts. This will reduce the chances of fatal mishaps.

What is the principle of hot rolling?
Hot rolled steel coils are used across industries for various purposes. From railways to construction projects, they are used as they offer good workability and have little to no tolerance stresses. Here we share with you a few useful insights on the principle of hot rolling:
What is hot rolling ?
Hot rolling is a metalworking process in which steel is heated above the recrystallization temperature to increase its mechanical strength. Hot rolling is typically done over 900 to 1000 degrees celsius. This high temperature allows the steel to be easily shaped and reformed, without breaking.
Tumblr media
How hot rolling is done?
Hot rolling is used to create larger, more complex shapes and to produce thinner materials with a lower surface roughness than cold rolling. The steps involved in hot rolled are as follows:
● Step 1: To process hot rolled steel, a large, rectangular length of metal, called a billet, is used. The billet is heated above its recrystallization temperature. This can be done in a variety of ways, but most commonly it is done in a furnace.
● Step 2: Once the steel has reached its recrystallization temperature, it is then passed through rollers. The rollers apply pressure to the steel, which helps to shape it into its desired form.
● Step 3: After the steel has been passed through the rollers, it is then cooled. The cooling process helps to solidify the steel so that it can be used for its intended purpose.
● Step 4: To make hot rolled sheets, the metal rolled into coils and left to cool. For bars or plates, materials are sectioned and packaged.
What are the types of hot rolled steel products?
Some of the common types of hot rolled steel products are:
●      Flat
●      Long
●      Seamless
●      Specialty
Why is hot rolling done?
Hot rolling is done to improve:
●      Toughness and strength
●      Ductility
●      Resistance to vibration and shock
●      Formability
●      Weldability
What are the benefits of hot rolled steel?
Hot rolled steel offers several manufacturing advantages, such as:
●      Lower cost: When compared to cold rolled steel, hot rolled steel is less expensive because it involves less processing.
●      Better workability: The processed material in hot rolled steel is easy to form and shape. It is because it occurs at elevated temperatures.
●      Little to no internal stress: The process of hot rolling involves cooling the steel gradually. It allows the material to normalise its structure.
Hot rolled steel applications
The most common applications of hot rolled steel are:
●      Agriculture
●      Automotive
●      Lifting & excavation
●      Pressure vessels
●      Railways
●      Shipbuilding
If you are looking for hot rolled steel for railways, auto components, shipbuilding  and commercial buildings, explore Tata Astrum, Tata Astrum Solar and Tata Astrum Super. They are leading brands offering segment-specific hot rolled steel coils.
