i read liz ryerson's latest blog post (about some of the steam next fest game demos) and she mentioned something that reminded me of some of the bits in homestuck made this world, and also, you know, writing generally, which is: what is the point of the Lore? it's very easy to get all caught up in the hazy mysterious worldbuilding of a game (this is like the entire thing vaatividya does, etc) but... does that, like, matter at all? homestuck made this world brings it up in relation to all the Grand Mystery Of Paradox Space stuff, like, all of the rules and regulations for how time loops and predestination works within the world of the fiction ultimately only really mattering if they end up saying something about, say, the themes of the work as they relate to the characters and their desires etc. the homestuck predestination stuff is about hussie's weird conceptualization of the writing process and narrative, or w/e. but as it relates to fromsoft games it's actually a little notable how little the worldbuilding actually matters to the reading of the game. there's always piles of vague mythologizing on the margins of the fromsoft games (hey whatever happened to allfather lloyd?) but those fragments seem to me to be less... part of a hidden system of meaning in the work that lets you determine what the game's really about, and more just some aesthetic signifiers placed to add a vibe to the game. in fromsoft games the meaning is absolutely secondary to the aesthetic gestures.

so as i've been working on my game and (slowly, falteringly) assembling some gameplay fragments and quest summaries i have been thinking about, you know, what the overall cosmology of the game is. but i don't really want to get stuck outlining all these vague mythological figures that impinge slightly on the plot; i keep thinking about the weird whimsical fairytale world of legend of mana where the game will just throw a bizarre collection of stuff at you and then completely fail to follow up on it. that's a very different style of vague worldbuilding than fromsoft worldbuilding. idk it's hard to say how much of it just comes down to taste, but i feel like legend of mana had a much more compelling thesis about life, death, etc, than dark souls, even if legend of mana's thesis is like "it's all just a big jumble and it's impossible to separate the good from the bad". dark souls is about beating up a succession of flame guys, and all the dying world backstory seems like such an afterthought, thematically, compared to the design of the nth big demon boss

Recently, I have been getting some support from the wonderful Tumblr community, as such I decided it is best if I start up my own blog here to post about my restarting of my life in Canada after completing my 40 months prison sentence for my role in the Team-Xecuter and Nintendo Switch mods, etc.

It has been a struggle for my first two years of freedom, the first year was the worse, homeless, jobless and with my lymphedema in my left leg not easy at all.

The second year has been better, now with a roof over my head and the ability to earn a bit of money on the side legally alongside my medical disability.

I have now been able to recover my original love and passion for the Texas Instruments Home Computers, and I am slowly working towards releasing some new software and hardware products for the retro computer hobbyists.

But it's still been a struggle on the medical side to get the Ontario government to help with my lymphedema and cover expenses, as such any support I get towards my GoFundMe is greatly appreciated and allows me to continue to do physiotherapy and get treatment and devices I need at home to enable me to have a full productive day.

wow what do you mean the corrupt and unjust nation of, uh, "the united cities" has some racist citizen brigades who attack non-humans & are set to be allied to the cops so the samurai legions will come to their aid if you fight back. kenshi has heard of subtle worldbuilding and wants nothing to do with it.

You really, really don't need to be cheerleading Disney and Universal here. It honestly doesn't matter how much you dislike AI art — if the court rules in favor of the corporations, the implicit expansion of copyright law will do a million times more harm to the arts than fucking Midjourney ever could.

Like. There is no definition of copyright that does not permit AI training, but does permit fanworks. The latter is much more clearly derivative than the former. You do fanart? Fanfic? Disney's pointing a gun squarely at your head and you're cheering because it might hit the AI artists behind you too.

And beyond that, do you know what happens to AI generation if Disney/Universal win this? They aren't opposed to the technology in principle! They'll be able to use their exclusive rights to a vast corpus of art to make their own AI, for their own purposes. Who does this help? Companies who want to reduce employment costs and disenfranchise the working artist. Who does this hurt? Well, it hurts independent AI users. Congrats, your anxiety over commission prices is gone now, not that it was well-founded to begin with. It also hurts anyone who wants to make use of fair use doctrine forever, so I hope none of what you were selling was fanart of copyrighted characters.

I've never made a secret of being rather more open to generative AI as a technology than most people in these online spheres. But for fuck's sake, you really don't need to like AI to realize that this lawsuit's success would be a terrible thing to happen to art! If you've found yourself on the same side as Disney, that should be a clue that you might wanna review your thinking!
