I will admit, it is almost funny the amount of times I've gotten various forms of "are you in the wheelchair for real?"
Like. No. I'm just using this custom built medical equipment that costs thousands of dollars for shits and giggles
What is it about just existing as a wheelchair user in public gives random fucking people the invitation to just come up to me and either, ask a bunch of invasive questions about my disability, or trauma dump about something that happened to them or a close friend/family member
#not to mention when they get visibly disappointed whenever I say that I am in the chair because of an illness and not an injury#like they really wanna hear this inspiring story of how I overcame some great tragedy#no one wants to hear about the burning reality that comes with just getting a chronic illness at a very young age#sorry I can't be your inspiration of the week Janice I am literally just a person existing in public#I know many other disabled people deal with this shit and have talked about it before but I'm so tired#physical disability#disability things#wheelchair user

I find it very offensive that the more unwell you are, the more things you have to do to maintain your health. Things like following special diets, going to medical appointments, making big and important decisions about what treatments to use. At the same time, the more unwell you are the less energy you have to do all of these extra things. It seems grossly unfair.
#it is annoyingly unfair#especially if you're unwell enough to not be able to work for long if at all#oh your chronic illness stops you from getting an income?#well guess what just Living as a chronicly ill/disabled person Costs significantly more than living as an able bodies one#you can apply for disability but guess what even if they seem you fit to qualify you probably won't even be able to afford your dozens of#doctors appointments and medications with it#especially if you need any sort of medical aid other than that#and other stuff you need to live? food? rent? yeah good luck with that#being unwell sucks

It was already weird seeing people theorize about Lizzie being pregnant. They will share whatever they want to share. Just let them enjoy this time. this disability pride month I’d like to spread the gospel of the shower chair. I’m not disabled but my father is, and when I first started visiting him from out of town I’d move his chair in and out of the tub as I showered until one day I said fuck it and kept it in.
And oh my god.
If you’re a person who needs a 1000°F shower, get a chair. Get a chair and let yourself sit in the sauna. It’s amazing.
Long live the shower chair.
