Prompt 6 ABC Splash Resource
Chosen clip: Discover the Diversity
http://splash.abc.net.au/home#!/media/1916032/discover-the-diversity-of-australia-aboriginal-and-torres-strait-islander-languages
This is a great introduction to exposing students to a variety of languages embedded within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander realm.
A text that could follow this video could be:
The Rainbow Serpent is a great book as it gets children thinking and picturing Australia’s landscape. After reading this text we could go back to the idea of languages and look at a map of Australia that is divided into the clans and try to investigate some languages and some landscapes of those various communities.

Prompt 4
Social Media/Class Displays
I think it is really important, vital, for children to be exposed to platforms of social media before they venture out and create accounts themselves. They need to be briefed on the dangers, the consequences of their actions online and of course, the cyber bullying and harassment that occurs on the world wide web.
However, children also need to be informed of the benefits that social media can have on their lives, both academically and socially. There is no doubt that social media makes it infinitely easy to connect and share ideas from just about any place at any time of the day.
Just like this task incorporates the use of Tumblr, social media platforms can enhance the education communication from person to person effortlessly.
I did not get a chance to make or display a poster regarding social media but I think it would be worthwhile to do a class research board. Students can find their own information about the strengths and weaknesses of using social media. This way they are all contributing to the knowledge and making sense of it as they go, rather than simply stating and displaying my own thoughts on the debate, without student input. An example may look something like this,
And could potentially include some pros and cons of each individual social media website.

Prompt 3
Multi-literacies
To be completely honest, the majority of my reading and interpreting written words is via the use of social media and messaging, all based primarily from my mobile phone. And, most of this is purely social, with the exception of group assignments which aren't as social and communicative as one would hope.
I do not particularly read the newspaper (apart from my horoscope most mornings waiting for my latte at my local.) But apart from that, I do not read a lot of formal informative text, except when I have assignments due.
Doing this tumblr at the last minute, I have enjoyed researching and finding evidence about explicit teaching and learning for assignment 1. I find this really interesting, in saying that, the biggest impact literacy has had on me personally this past week, is that it has helped me construct and form an assignment that I am proud of.

Prompt 2
Prediction Activity
The students upon being shown only the front cover of this book could potentially think, pair and share ideas regarding the:
a) Use of colour
b) Plot
c) Illustrations
c) Title and text
d) Genre and age recommendation
After the students have think, paired and shared they are able to read the blurb and change a few things about their predictions.
Possible extension activity for early finishers/if they are responding well and are engaged:
We will continue to do a research task and students will make a information page or advertisement on the book (without even having read it!!)
If this book is a part of their syllabus for the year it could be an idea to make an information page at the commencement of the unit, and at the conclusion of the term. By then the students would have read the book and they will be able to see just how their opinion of the book differs from the opinions or reviews they have read.

Week 1
My primary school reading experience is vague within my memory however, I distinctively remember books such as ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar,’ ‘Possum Magic,’ and every Dr. Seuss book created. I still enjoy reading Dr. Seuss books today, and will take every opportunity to include them and other relevant literature in my lessons wherever possible and for whatever grade. I don't recall learning much at school about reading or being read to aloud butI always had fun reading with my mum at home. Still to this day, I am not a novel type of person, I often get sidetracked or bored when reading long books.
