Several Sentences Sunday âď¸
Tagged by the lovely @spotsandsocks with an update on her story (that I will catch up on, I promise my dear!)
I haven't participated in one of these for a while but I have a couple of stories that I just need to edit (shh don't look at me like that), so here's something from one of those:
Although the whole Eddie going on a date with a man does matter. Simply because it meansâŚwell, it means that Eddie is an option. Buck is an option. And Eddie didnât ask him. Buck frowns deeply as he mixes his dough. Eddie didnât need to ask him out. Doesnât need to at any point. Because theyâre best friends. And best friends donât date. Not unless theyâre in love with each other. Obviously Eddie isnât in love with Buck. Because heâs on a date with a guy he met at a coffee shop and liked enough to ask out. And BuckâŚBuck isnâtâŚ

buck should win a voucher for a couple's spa weekend getaway somehow and initially he tries to pass it on to madney or henren because he's in his Stoic and Learning To Be Alone phase but maddie and chim aren't ready to leave baby nash for a night and karen (whilst shooting hen a Look) loudly says 'ohh I think we're busy all that month, why don't you just take eddie?' and eddie ambles at the sound of his name and whistles at the sight of the voucher and says 'that place is FANCY, paco took pepa for their anniversary last year. hey if we tell them it's OUR anniversay they might give US free champagne too'
buck, weakly: oh... okay...
fake dating spa weekend to get extra freebies. there's only one bed and it's covered in rose petals. there are two massage tables but they're in handholding distance. buck's in a saw trap, eddie's having a lovely time :)

kinda need a scene where the whole firefam are together and itâs game night or whatever and they need to pair up and someone goes well no couples this time! and after some arguing, everyone agrees. then buck chooses eddie as his partner, because duh, and everyone is like wait. no. and buck goes :) what? weâre not a couple. and eddie goes :) yeah. weâre not. and everyone just stares at them and says nothing and for the rest of the night theyâre both kinda distracted and then when buck is driving them home heâs like eddie, weâre not a couple, right? and eddie is like. um. yeah. obviously. and buck is like yeah! because youâre straight! and eddie is like Actually, about that. and buck almost crashes the car.

âDad, whoâs Buck?â
âUhâŚâ Eddie turns to look at Christopher from where he stands at the stove. âWhat do you mean, buddy? You feeling okay?â Eight-year-olds donât get memory problems like this. Right?
Christopher doesnât seem to notice his concern. âYeah, Iâm okay. But today, I told my teacher that we went to the aquarium on Sunday with Buck, and she said, âWhoâs Buck?â I told her heâs a firefighter, but she was still confused.â
Oh, thank God. Eddie sighs in relief, laughing a bit to himself.
âBuck is a firefighter, right, Dad? Even though he got hurt?â
âYes, mijo, heâs still a firefighter, just taking a break until he feels better,â Eddie reassures him. âBut I think your teacher was trying to ask how you know Buck, not just what his job is. So thatâs why she was confused.â
âOh.â Chris tilts his head thoughtfully. Like Buck, Eddieâs brain supplies. Itâs adorable. âSo whatâs the right answer?â
Ever the little scientist, he is. âThis isnât the type of question that only has one right answer. Sometimes, questions have more than one answer that works.â
Rolling his eyes, Chris sighs impatiently. âOkay, so what are all the answers?â
Eddie smiles. âWell, you can tell her that Buck and I are partners.â Um. âWork partners, because we work together. So thatâs why I know Buck.â
âWhat else?â
âHeâs also our friend, right?â
Chris nods very seriously. âOf course.â After another moment, he asks, âDad? Is Buck your best friend?â
Part of Eddie considers telling Chris that adults donât always have best friends the way kids do, but Chris is at that age where he doesnât like being reminded that heâs a kid, andâand anyway, heâs right, isnât he? The way Eddie feels about Buck is justâŚdifferent. Different from his other friendships, different from family, different fromâfrom Shannon.
Well, obviously different from Shannon. It wouldnât make sense otherwise.
Anyway. âYeah, Buck is my best friend, Chris.â
âBest friend in the whole world?â
âBest friend in the whole world,â Eddie confirms with a smile.
âGood.â Chris grins back at him. âHeâs my best friend, too.â
Distantly, Eddie wishes Buck could hear this. âSo Buck has two best friends! Should we tell him?â
Turning back to his math homework, Chris shakes his head dismissively. âHe already knows, Dad.â
Well, Chris is a kid, so of course he thinks thatâs how it works. Eddie isnât too sure, though. Sometimes, Buck really has to have things spelled out for him. Maybe this is one of those things.
But Buck should know. Eddie really hopes he does.

This is probably a good way to get myself blocked by people, but I have such a problem with how normalized it's become for fanartists to have a Patreon and lock so much of their art behind a paywall. It's not about copyright infringement. Like whatever, I don't care about that. It's about the fact that it goes against what fandom is supposed to be about. It takes something that's supposed to be about freely sharing and turns it into a business proposition. Fandom is supposed to be a gift economy, where we do this for the community and social bonds it brings, where we give generously with no expectation of getting compensated for it.
And beyond that (and at the risk of sounding petulant), it's not fair. Imagine how much (justified) shit a writer would get for posting like, the first paragraph of a fic and then going, "To read the rest of this, first subscribe to my Patreon!!" I'm not saying I have any desire to make money off of fanfiction. I don't. But I do think it's strange that the labor of not only writing but of gif making and fanvid making and writing meta and even commenting and reblogging, all these things that make up the backbone of a fandom, is done for free, and fanart has become a thing where it's almost expected that every artist will have a Patreon and lock much of their art. I really hate it, if I'm being honest.
