The lack of thorough information concerning both Deria and Mara Martell derives from both historical accounts of them being told in relation to their interactions with House Targaryen. Deria, at the time heir to Nymor Martell, journeyed to King's Landing to present Aegon the Conquerer with Meraxes' skull and mysterious letter from her father; at great personal risk, as was evidenced by the Small Council's suggestions about mutilating or humiliating her. That she was willing to attend the court of her country's direst enemy suggests Deria may have been brave, devoted or singularly loyal to her people.

The delegation was successful in securing the end of the First Dornish War, in large part attributed to the unknown contents of the letter Deria carried, though perhaps also because of her own diplomatic prowess. She would go on to inherit Dorne from her father, with no public resuming of tensions save for the unsanctioned actions of the various Vulture Kings. By 49 AC, she'd been succeeded by an unnamed Prince of Dorne, who may have been her son; it is unclear if he was also the Prince who absented from the Third Dornish War twenty years later, and therefore the father of Prince Morion "the Mad" Martell.

Mara Martell's precise relationship to Prince Morion is also unknown, though he was young when he came to power and died almost immediately during the Fourth Dornish War. She may therefore have been his sister rather than daughter, though the specifics of both Mara herself and her reign have not been specified. All that is said is that Dorne restored peaceful and even positive relations with King Jaehaerys, so much so that they publicly mourned his death, though this may as much have been by necessity as by Mara's personal preference.
