“Mr. Brainard, I have an appointment to speak          with you about your recent publication.”          Poe’s tone was guarded and yet it was polite as he offered his hand to shake. He had plenty of criticisms about the work and a few compliments but mostly he wished to get ideas from the writer himself. He had the feeling that this man was not only absent minded, but perhaps CLUMSY.

“Have you read the most recent publication         of Elizabeth Browning’s poetry? It is QUITE         droll.”         Edgar inquired, perusing the periodical, searching for not only his own criticism of the work but also examining the criticisms given by others, all sickeningly  positive.

WOULD she welcome him back? It felt as though he had been gone for so long and now what sort of excuse would he be required to give her to explain the absence? Warily Poe rapped upon her front door but stood ERECT, prepared for whatever sort of response he may receive. He was perfect prepared for a literal slap across his face.

Poe had not felt like going out that evening. In fact, he would have preferred to AVOID it if at all possible. However, upon being told of the prominent figures (  literary or otherwise ) that would be present he concluded that it may prove to be beneficial for him to attend. It was a masquerade, so of course  it would draw the interest of the artistic or those who themselves as such population.        Upon entering, he removed his cape and checked it. His MASK in place he swept into the crowded room and his eyes carefully examined the minute details that surrounded him. Polite smiles and nods were given and received but boredom pervaded his mood. He made his way to the beverage table and upon receiving his beverage, a woman beside him was shoved, splashing the liquid on his clothing as well as her own.

“Are you alright?”              Yes, he could have ignored her fall, but before all else, he was a GENTLEMAN and planned to stand beside what he was taught.

“Whatever happens is out of my          control now.”          Poe’s tone was soft and he gave a slow shake of his head. He knew it would only be futile to attempt to REMEDY a situation as such. NO, it was better if he simply let the predicament run its course no matter how it would end.

Thus all ends well — if the word well can be applied in any sense to trash so ineffable.

“Oh, come now. There’s almost always          a REASON to care.”        For him, the keyword was ‘ almost ’. He knew from firsthand experience that there were many times in which one simply becomes purely numb to a situation.

“It’s called LACK of caring. In normal circumstances, I WOULD care, but for now, I just don’t SEE the point.

Poe eyed her carefully, unblinking. He took a STEADY breath and finally gave a single nod. He had seen proof that simply because someone perceived that a situation was under control, it did not necessarily mean that it was true.         “Indeed; perhaps avoid being so           RECKLESS.”
