it's so wild to me that you absolutely cannot force a hyperfixation to happen. like you'll watch the most perfectly tailor-made-for-you content that everyone says you'll love and feel absolutely nothing, and then the thing you watch on a whim to fill time will reach through the screen and put its damn fingers in your brain and start rearranging the neurons right in front of you and every single time you're like THIS??? THIS??????? and this happens like every 6-12 months forever

While I've never exactly liked Santa Ana winds, I've never felt this level of sustained dread about them. Like, just go tf away, already. 😞

If you’re like me, natural disasters (even those far away) give me anxiety. I’ve found it helpful to check in over the last few days with the local ABC livestream. They’ve got great shots from the air.
Tonight, I was freaked out by the Palisades fire moving east (toward all of LA proper) and north (over into the valley). But watching their coverage, I learned that the authorities had anticipated this movement and spent hours today in the air laying down a heavy line of fire retardant and on the ground prepping defense. Helicopters also have been dropping water continuously tonight. So far, it looks like their efforts are working well, and the fires are stalling at the line, especially on the ridge at the north. The fires have been noticeably weakening. Thank goodness the winds are low.
Just … you know. If it’s helpful. 🫶

some people continue to be really fucking weird & mean about the current Los Angeles fire emergency, for no particular reason that I can discern, so idk maybe I can clear up a few things:
"Haha Why Do You Even Live There If It Catches Fire All The Time": my dude, we didn't have a 'Fire Season' until recently, thanks to climate change. yes, wildfires are a natural part of California's ecosystem, but not like this! (similar to how some places are getting slammed with multiple apocalyptically powerful Once-In-Five-Hundred-Years hurricanes within a few years: yes, hurricane activity is normal for the area, but getting flattened by Poseidon every other year is very fucking new & very fucking bad)
"LMAO, You Ran Out of Water?": idk how to tell you this, but city water tanks are designed for house fires & normal emergencies, not worst-case apocalypse scenarios that empty out multiple million-gallon tanks in a matter of minutes. city systems were not designed for this kind of shit, because this kind of shit on this scale is fucking NEW (see: climate change)
"But Still, You Guys Have Fires All The Time": in less populous areas, not like this - this is already the worst fire in the city's history and it's just getting started.
this is not a normal scale of emergency. multiple major fires EXPLODED in a matter of hours, inside & around a major metropolitan area with ten million residents. it is not like typical wildfires, or typical city fires. this is ten thousand fires all at once across a huge swathe of Los Angeles and surrounding areas, with powerful Once-In-A-Quarter-Century winds fanning the flames across a particularly parched landscape.
every worst condition, all at the same time, and then it caught fire.
there are already literally thousands of firefighters working these fires & it is not even close to enough. California knows what to do and how to do it, but we literally physically do not have the resources to get shit contained because this is a Worst Case Disaster on an unprecedented scale & every single factor in nature is working against us.
"Whatever I Still Think It's Stupid That You're Having Such A Bad Time, You Should've Been Able To Handle It" -- I'm having rage flashbacks to the post-hurricane discourse from a few months ago. I'm sure we can nitpick things that could've been better when all's said & done, but some of you truly have no sense of SCALE. This is not a city services problem! Some natural disasters can be easily ridden out by a wealthy & well-prepared community; other natural disasters are simply big enough & bad enough to beat the shit out of any human community no matter what they do, and you need to be able to recognize that.
I don't know how to explain that with all the privileges of wealth & technology & preparedness, human beings are still very small and nature is very big and sometimes your very best is not enough.
Sometimes, things really are that fucking bad & that fucking scary. Sometimes, nothing that humans can do will withstand nature. Sometimes the best we can do is help as much as possible, run if we have to run, and figure out how to rebuild after.
Sometimes maybe you shouldn't be a dick.
a final note: I feel like this should be fucking obvious, but my post is not an invitation to argue with me and/or say more weird mean unnecessary shit about the fires. this is also not a comprehensive overview of Southern California's wildfire history or fire management practices or emergency preparedness or political scuffles. you are welcome to discuss these topics at length & at volume, on your own fucking post.

New Bughead Fic (One of Those 5+1 Ones)
I've always wanted to write a 5+1 fic, so...I did.
5 Times Jughead Proposes to Betty (and 1 Time He Doesn't)
Jughead is so delightfully extra in this one.
Tell me what you think if you like. I always squeal a little at every comment.
This is dedicated to @earthlaughsinflowers2, who is endlessly thoughtful and supportive. (Also, just awesome in general.)
