Why is Understanding Consumer Behaviour Important for Businesses?
Consumer behaviour is a concept that is usually taught in business management or business administration course. It is one of the core management concepts' that is imperative for students to understand and grasp because in a real-world situation every product or service is dependent on its consumer. In layman terms, if one understands their consumers, they can effectively sell their product or services.
What is Consumer Behaviour? Consumer behaviour is a pattern of behaviours that a consumer follows before making a purchase; be it a product or a service. The process begins when a consumer identifies their need or desire and ends the consumer purchases the product or service. The consumers who repeated buy the product/service with the same pattern every time are the ones that define what consumer behaviour is for a particular product.
Why is it important? When it comes to business the purpose is to sell your product and service to the consumer. Understanding consumer behaviour is important because it aids in the process of marketing the product or service. Consumer behaviour tells us how customers are interacting with your product or service, how they are using it, at what frequency are they consuming it.
Entrepreneurs these days have an online presence because the consumers have shifted to e-commerce websites for buying products/services. For such cases, understanding consumer behaviour is important as you can gauge your audience from a wider pool that you can’t physically reach.
Consumer behaviour as a concept of a bachelor in business management or a bachelor in business administration is important to grasp before launching a product. If a company or an organisation fails to understand its end-user it will become to sell the product. This, in turn, will incur losses for the company.
Another reason why understanding the nuances of consumer behaviour becomes important is the fact that it helps consumers shifting preferences. We live in a dynamic world, shifting constantly; there are constant changes in fashion, technology, trends, living standards and much more. With this shift, the consumer's attitude towards buying products and services also changes. They develop new habits and purchasing patterns as a result and businesses need to keep a track of these to ensure that they are attuned to the consumer's thought process.
Having a strong understanding of consumer behaviour also helps in providing customer satisfaction. Once a business knows what a consumer is looking for they can change and adjust the product and services according to a consumer's liking. It helps in figuring where would be the ideal place for the consumer to buy the product, how much are they willing to pay for it and with what are they willing to buy the product or service. All these help set goals in place for an organisation to optimise their sales and effectively market the product to the end-user, which is the consumer. Consumer behaviour plays a key role in running a successful business because if the consumers aren’t happy then the product or the service won’t be able to survive the massive competition in the market.

Data Science is the Future
Data science and the world of AI(artificial intelligence) has caused a stir in current times. They have taken the world by a storm and all the leading giants have jumped on the bandwagon to create a future that is AI dependent and data science driven. Companies like Tesla, Volkswagen, Google and more are not working with the technology because it is cool and is trending; they see potential. They understand that it is the future of the world.
Data science and data science courses are trending and they are here to stay. Data science is not a passing trend like crimped hair from the 90s; it is timeless like the little black dress that Coco Chanel first came up with! As the LBD has been used and created in multiple different ways by multiple designers; similarly data science as a tool can be moulded according to the AI you are working with to create a technology that can better the future of the world.
Now that we have established, data science is a functionality that can be implemented across multiple disciplines; more and more industries and businesses are utilizing this tool optimally to achieve greater results. This, in turn, has given rise to data science courses and careers as a data scientist. Talking about the courses universities across the world have started offering courses in data science; these range from full-time Master’s programmes or 1-year graduate diploma programmes like ISBF in New Delhi does; some universities have even started offering short term crash courses online for students to get familiar with the subject.
Universities abroad like Stanford, Columbia, Georgetown, Berkley and many more offer programmes in data science. Indian universities that offer data science programmes are IIT Guwahati, IIM Lucknow, Ahmedabad University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and many more. Other leading universities have started taking initiatives to include such programmes. The universities are increasingly creating a curriculum that will help students create a career in data science.
People wonder why there is a sudden surge in the field of data science. It is because the companies have the rights to collect data from the customers, however, they do not have the right skills to compile and make meaningful inferences from it. This is where data scientists step in. Data scientists additionally help in storing data responsibly and can swiftly provide real-time analytics.
Data science is still evolving and there is major scope in this industry; this means that the career will not remain stagnant and you will have plenty of growth opportunities. Data science job titles are also likely to get more specific. With the advent of data in the world and people increasingly putting out more information, businesses have a staggering amount of data and they need data scientists to make sense of it. Data science was listed as one of the most promising careers in 2019 and this trajectory is only going up.
Data science has opened up a wide range of career opportunities for students. The best thing about studying a data science course is that it is multidisciplinary and you can venture into any business industry that suits you.

Role of Data Science in E-Commerce
Data science is everywhere, from the apps we use to the shows we watch and the food we order. This booming career industry is so inter-disciplinary and versatile that the flourishing e-commerce industry cannot operate without it.
Consider the example of Amazon, it was the first e-commerce that set this chain of events in motion where now we can buy stuff that we want from the comfort of our homes. The e-commerce industry has made our lives convenient and we have developed an increased dependency on platforms like Amazon, eBay etc. Our online lives have taken a turn and now companies employ data science techniques to provide us with the best user experience.
Before amazon, shopping and going to the retail stores was an everyday phenomenon. Now it has turned into an experience-based business. Shopping malls exist and aren’t completely extinct yet but, retailers now have to increasingly make efforts to draw an audience to the stores. They have to create an experience like no other to attract an audience.
Data science, over the years, has played an important role in the booming e-commerce industry. Consider the case Amazon, whenever you click on a product that you want to buy, there are multiple options if you scroll down, like “people who have bought this also bought” or “frequently bought together”. Ever wonder how data science helps to do this. Amazon collects data from its millions of users and then builds a data science model to understand what the consumer patterns are.
Once the model is built, a clean set of the database without any anomalies is run through it. Once the data is churning, the data science technique tries to detect whether there are any patterns available. For instance, people who bought a Harry Potter book also bought Tales of Beadle the Bard or if someone bought a water bottle what is the most commonly bought lunch box to go with it. Detecting these kinds of patterns and consumer behaviour trends is what data science technique is all about. Once such trends and patterns are detected the information is then relayed back to the end-user using effective communication tools. The information relayed has to be precise and compact and meaningful; it has to be able to solve a unique problem or address a frequently detected question.
Data science has spread its wings far and wide and it continues to so it. The future that we are expecting is heavily dependent on data science techniques as every second there is a new need to predict the next best thing. Data science can not only be used to simplify our lives but it can also be used to detect and solve real-world issues and problems. It is a helpful building tool in public policymaking, the healthcare industry, the aviation industry and much more. For students who are looking to pursue courses in data science, there are numerous institutions in India and around the world that offer data science courses. ISBF in New Delhi is one such institution. Pursuing a data science course equips students with relevant skills to effectively apply them in various aspects of their chosen career paths.

How is Visual Communication Different from Graphic Design?
While visual communication and graphic design are similar in nature since they both involve design, at their core, they’re both different.
That being said, having a keen eye for detail, an abundance of creativity, and knowing their way with the software involved is essential. If you’re looking to build your career in this field, but aren’t sure which is the right one for you, take a look at this easy guide.
What is visual communication? Visual communication focuses on expressing or communicating ideas or information through visual means. This could be through gestures, signs, symbols, typography, graphic design and much more.
In other words, these professionals not only design but also visualize the concept they want to communicate and use their design and any other visual aspect to express this. It’s interesting to see that the demand for this expertise has grown tremendously over the last few years making it ideal for those considering a career in visual communication.
Take a look at some of the promising careers in this field: ● Communications Manager ● Photojournalist ● Communications Designer ● Video Editor ● Art and Design Director ● Advertising Manager ● Design Illustrator and Artist
What is graphic design? Graphic design, on the other hand, is a more specialized field dedicated solely to design. It involves creating graphics for advertising, website or print mediums. Rather than focusing on photography, animation or other visual cues, graphic designers focus on creating key graphical elements that can then be used to create attractive designs.
Some of the popular careers in this field are: ● Graphic Designer ● Logo designer ● Brand Identity Designer ● Website Designer ● User Experience Designer (UX) ● Web Designer ● Packaging Designer ● Art Director
What sets them apart? Within graphic design, there are a number of different specializations like computer graphic design, motion graphics, and even website graphic design.
Before choosing a course in the field of communication design, here are the key differences between visual communication and graphic design that will help you decide which one to opt for.
For starters, graphic design can be considered as part of the broad spectrum within communication design. Both the fields focus on aesthetics but communication design usually takes it one step further.
While the main focus of graphic design deals with the process of creating the elements and mastering the software needed to achieve the result, visual communication stresses the actual message or emotion that should be conveyed through the medium. This medium could be graphic design or it could simply be illustrations, symbols or a drawing.
It all comes down to whether you’d like to use your creativity for creating the design or you’d be like to be more involved in expressing the idea behind the design.
Some of the mediums used in visual communication are photography, videos, models, graphs, illustrations, etc.
Another difference between the two careers is their salary. Since the role of graphic designers doesn’t encompass the communication or messaging that needs, their salaries are not the same as visual designers or communicators.

What is Data Science?
Data Science is an art of extracting information from large amounts of structured or unstructured data. Data science involves using data inference, algorithm development and technology to conclude analytical questions. It aids in problem-solving for a company or business. It is like sifting through mines of information and then analysing it and using it to solve complex issues and problems.
Data science has its roots spread out in all disciplines - it isn’t called a multi-disciplinary course for no reason. It has practical application in all fields, ranging from science to economics, from fashion to food, from finance to even Netflix! Netflix uses data algorithms to keep track of the kinds of movies and shows that do well. That is how they come to conclusions regarding what shows to continue in the next season to what kinds of films to be added.
Let’s talk about Netflix as an example. Netflix is a platform to consume video content. It initially started by hosting some movies and then went in producing shows that did well, but were dropped by original producers from creating further seasons. Netflix keeps a tab on all such shows and tends to pick them up if they have tremendous fan backing and if they see the potential. This is done with the help of data, that may be organised or unorganised.
Netflix collects data from its millions of subscribers and uses data analytics or big data to discover consumer behaviours and buying patterns. They use this information to recommend movies and/or TV shows to us, their users. A typical course in data analytics or data science familiarises you with information systems management, machine learning, elements of econometrics, business analytics, applied modelling and prediction. There are numerous institutions across India and the world that offer data science courses. ISBF is one of them, where they offer a Graduate Diploma in Data Science. The course is intensive and prepares you for practical application as well. Most institutions offer PG courses in data science.
This is just a tiny glimpse into what Netflix is doing and how it has garnered profit worth millions. They have used data science and its tools extensively to create each and every aspect of the business they have. They have judiciously and systematically used tools to sift out data and extract meaningful information from it. Data scientists try to detect patterns, and behaviours when looking at huge chunks of data. The number of times a person pauses their video can also turn out to be meaningful and useful as with the case of Netflix. Data mining opens up the floodgates to information, a lot of information, which when put together systematically and logically can help create a solution that can change the world.
There are millions of industries and businesses out there who are using data science as a tool to create solutions that are viable and long term. Big data analysis is a way to solve complex problems and requires a combination of mathematical expertise, technology and business acumen. To sum up, it guides through data information and helps companies develop data products.

BBA or BBM - What’s What?
Choosing a course at undergraduate is already an uphill battle, but it becomes all the more challenging when the courses seem similar with slight differences. Such is the case with a Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Business Management. Both the courses are rooted in commerce and teach poignant details about the business administration. The course structure for BBA and BBM are similar barring a few minor changes. BBA equips students with managing and supervising businesses and how to handle day to day operations of a business/ company, while BBM equips students with management techniques that are applicable in the business world.
BBA and BBM differences don’t just stop there. BBM offers students skills in the administrative part of any business, it covers the basic study of marketing, finance, human resource management and much more so that they can handle all aspects of running a business. This trains you in the managerial aspects of the corporate world. A course like teaches you to make important decisions, handle teams and manage any other aspects of the smooth functioning of the company.
A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) course is similar in terms of curriculum and subjects offered to a BBM course. They only differ in the weight given to what aspect of the business to focus on. You gain leadership and entrepreneurial skills which are extremely useful if you intend to work in the corporate world. These skills come in handy whether you want to work with a big conglomerate or are a start-up entrepreneur.
BBA and BBM being more similar than different, they enable all students to pursue nearly the same master's programmes. The most sought after course after completing either of these courses is an MBA programme. Most students who want to develop their managerial or entrepreneurial skills further opt for an MBA. Other courses to pursue at a masters level after BBA and BBM are Masters in finance, accounting, international business, banking, HR management, commerce and many more. For students who are looking for short term courses that will arm them with practical knowledge, there are a plethora of postgraduate diploma courses available, for instance, ISBF offers a Diploma in finance, management and economics; you can choose according to your preference.
There is a multitude of career choices as well for you to pursue and there are no specifics for either. All career options can be explored/achieved with either of the degrees. You can work as a finance manager, business administration researcher, human resource manager, research and development manager, accountant, business consultant, information systems manager or marketing manager among many others. Other sectors where you can look for employment are banks, marketing organisations, educational institutions, business consultancies, multinational corporations, financial organisations and even export business.
In conclusion, there isn’t an outrageous difference between BBA and BBM, they essentially teach the same courses and texts just their focus differs. While BBA offers a holistic approach where you are armed with the entire knowledge of how an organisation functions. While on the other hand, BBM addresses the above and focuses on developing managerial level skills as well, so that one leans to undertake decisions that keep an organization or a company running smoothly.
