IELTS is an international exam that is required for students, working professionals and people who want to move to other countries to assess their level of English language proficiency. There are certain things a candidate should know before taking the exam.
Here is 15 Things to Know About IELTS
IELTS tests a candidate's four skills, namely listening, reading, writing and speaking. The score obtained is an indicator of the candidate's English proficiency.
Points are set from 9 ranges that correspond to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
The duration of the test is 2 hours and 40 minutes, excluding speaking, which lasts approximately 15 minutes. There are various centers around the world and the test is given four times a month.
The candidate must pay fourteen thousand seven hundred rupees in Indian currency to register for the examination. The British Council and IDP are the two governing bodies that administer the exam.
A valid identification document, such as a passport, is required to register for the exam. Registration of IELTS is carried out only through the official portals of the British Council and IDP. The date is assigned depending on the availability of places in the examination center.
IELTS scores are valid for two years. Point requirements are determined by the university/college where the application is being made. For example, the average university in Canada requires 6 credits in each module with a total score of 6.5.
There are two versions of the IELTS exam. Academic and General. The academic version is required for studying abroad, while general education is for candidates wishing to migrate to these countries. There is a slight difference in the exam design, especially in the written module.
Let's move on to the exam itself. The first is the Listening module, which tests the candidate's ability to listen. The duration is forty minutes and the candidate must answer 40 questions. The test scheme and evaluation criteria are similar.
Further, the Reading module is designed for one hour. The candidate must answer forty questions based on comprehension passages. The academic version consists of three passages, while the general preparation consists of five passages. Even the evaluation criteria are different. A candidate who scores 7 on an academic test would need 30 correct answers, but a candidate for general studies would need 34-35 points to get 7 points.

The writing module tests the student's ability to write in English. For both academic and general learning Assignment-2 essay writing is the same, but Assignment-1 is different. In Academic, Assignment-1 requires writing a report, while the candidate is required to write a letter for Assignment-1.
Written assignments are graded on grammar, vocabulary, task response, and coherence. Written assignments should have a beginning, meaningful paragraphs, and an end. Letters should have proper greetings and closing sentences.
The talking module is the same for both versions. It lasts 11-14 minutes. This is a one-on-one interview between the candidate and the examiner. Fluency, pronunciation, content, use of idiomatic structures will bring a high score.
The result is announced after 13 days of testing. The test report form is sent to the postal address of the candidate.
To pass this exam, the candidate needs to hone their English language skills. It is recommended to focus on the basics of the English language, whether it be grammar or vocabulary, as well as fluency/pronunciation.
