It took a long time to finally decide on the shape of this piece, particularly the bottom. In the end, I decided on a dimple blade shape as I wanted to catch the sense of speed through the water under a hot sun, the wind filling the sales. So often I've tried a painting that hasn't worked and ended up painting over it. Sometimes, there's these incredible ridge lines that appear under the new colour, like here. A delicate touch on those lines is all I really need to feel satisfied. We in the west have come to see and use Tibet as a tourist attraction of a particularly unhappy sort. Spiritual home to many, an ancient land, a land of elemental conflict and humble prayer. I've taken many of the colours found in prayer flags and given them to these mysterious, high ideal mountains. The shape in the top left,木, is one of the Chinese characters for wood. That's the starting point of this work in progress using a wood frame stripped of its canvas, chopsticks, and bamboo skewers. 'Wind In The Sails' is a new style for me. There's a strength to the simple colours and lines that I hope to evolve. For now, I am happy with this start. Wind In The Sails is a work in progress. I like the simplicity of the lines though I'd like to add to the body of the boat and do something a little more stylish with the sails. Jade comes in many colours other than green, though green is the most popular and most closely associated with jade. All the colours here can be found in jade.
