Just saying that in the victorian/edwardian era adjusting someone's clothes was a sign of closeness/companionship between family and spouses and after Edwin realized he was in love with Charles, he immediately takes the first opportunity to do this:

Dead Boy Detectives as a concept will never not make me insane and unwell. Because there's a world where Charles Rowland survived the night. A world where he's found in that attic, close to death, but not quite there. A world where he's saved, and gets to grow up past 16, and have a life and a family of his own, showing his own children exactly how a father is supposed to love and care for them.
A world where he forgets about the boy who sat with him while he slowly froze, who read him stories and made him laugh. He must have been hallucinating, the doctors tell him, delirious from the cold. He must have made up a friend to keep himself warm. And maybe they're right, Charles thinks. What was his name again? Edward? Evan? Charles can't quite remember, it was so long ago. It's not important anyway.
So Charles puts it out of his mind. He carries on living. Who knows what happened to the ghost boy in the attic? If he even existed at all? Maybe he's still there, with that rusty old lantern and those crumbling comic books. Maybe he's aimlessly wandering, looking for other souls to help. Maybe he's lost.
Ah well, Charles thinks, he'll never know.
There's a world where Charles Rowland survived. And that story is the tragedy.

𝐋𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐒.
literally letter threads are elite. that’s. that’s all the context we have here. also bc the language is obviously being changed slightly here. so, for clarification: the person receiving the meme, is the writer of the letter! the person SENDING the meme, is RECEIVING the letter! now. go write letters, u magnificent cupcakes, and DO NOT ADD TO THIS LIST!!! i will know, and i will hunt u down and curse ur potatoes to be soapy and bland and messy for all eternity.
[ LOVE ]:     the writer begins the first of a series of love letters to the recipient.
[ SORRY ]:     the writer delivers a letter of apology to the recipient.
[ LAST ]:     a letter sent in the aftermath of the writer’s death.
[ TWIST ]:     a letter sent in the aftermath of the writer’s alleged death, only to reveal that they are, in fact, still alive.
[ FINAL ]:     a letter written in the aftermath of the recipient’s death, where the writer knows they’ll never get the chance to read it.
[ INITIATE ]:     a letter written to the recipient in order to maintain communication between the two while the writer is far away from them.
[ FAREWELL ]:     a letter written to say goodbye to the recipient, where the writer knows there’s an extremely high chance that they’ll never see each other again.
[ REVELATION ]:     a letter written that reveals the truth about an event(s) that the writer believes the recipient may be misinformed about.
[ EXPLAIN ]:     a letter that explains the reasoning behind choices that the writer has made in the past, which they would like to explain to the recipient.
[ BAD ]:     a letter that delivers bad news to the recipient.
[ UPDATE ]:     a letter that updates the recipient on the writer’s life, or certain on-going events that are happening in their life.
[ AFAR ]:     a letter delivered by the writer from another country/city/planet/etc in order to reassure the recipient and let them know they’re okay. (not intended to be a back-and-forth, like [ INITIATE ] does).
[ HIDDEN ]:     a letter written and delivered to the recipient in secret, for the recipient’s eyes only, as a result of information it contains, or because of the person who wrote it.
[ UNSENT ]:     a letter written for the recipient, but which the writer ultimately never sends for reasons that the writer conceals, or may reveal within the letter itself.
[ MISTAKE ]:     a letter which is sent to the recipient by mistake, and which may contain sensitive information about the recipient.
[ UNVEIL ]:     a letter which reveals the truth about a plan that the writer previously and deliberately concealed from the recipient for their safety/well-being.
[ NEEDED ]:     a letter that the writer wrote for the recipient after learning of their recent struggles in their personal life, and which contains uplifting words of encouragement, support and other things they feel they should hear to help them through.
[ PILLOW ]:     a letter left neatly atop a pillow on the bed that the writer and recipient share, that is discovered by the recipient the following morning after the writer leaves the room/home.
[ FRIDGE ]:     a letter attached to the fridge with magnets for the recipient to read in the kitchen.
[ KNOWN ]:     a letter which the writer left in a place that only the writer and recipient know of, knowing that only the recipient would be able to find it first.
[ HELP ]:     a letter written by the writer to the recipient, asking the recipient for help.
[ STOP ]:     a letter written for the recipient which the writer intends to be their final letter to them, and which ultimately concludes all communications between the writer and recipient from that moment forth.
[ PAST ]:     a letter which the writer wrote in the past, that reveals a piece of their backstory, that the reader finds and reads out of curiosity. (this could also be a letter written TO the receiver of the meme, or about them, or anything at all!)

From Hell, With Love
Two Verses /Verse Themes under the same concept
Canon Based Verse--Minus the Netflix Return to Hell Plotline
Edwin Payne has disappeared. The obvious cause is, in fact, the reality: he's ended up back in Hell. While far from ideal there is one big difference from the last time he was there: Edwin Payne has figured out how to send letters. Coherent Letters? Well, lets not be choosy when being chased by a doll-baby head spider that's worse than a demon.
AU Verse
Edwin Payne never left hell. That doesn't mean he can't write.

Modern Verses
Base for most Modern Verses
For Any Verse Where Edwin is not from Edwardian England
How do you get someone like Edwin but born in the 60s, 70s or even 2000s? You raise him in a cult.
These verses will likely have variety based on the needs of the interaction but in short Edwin will either have been raised in a magical or non-magical society/group that has not moved beyond a general concept of Edwardian England. Why Edwin is no longer with the group he was raised by will very.

Out of Time
Pending a better name
Tuberculosis was a death sentence--but not an immediate one.
Edwin Payne might not have enjoyed school but he never would have sought to shorten his own life to get out of it. So when he found out he wasn't going to have the leisure of time to sort out all of his thoughts and worries and next steps--he decided to try to find the time.
This is a verse to house any within the themes of
Time Travel
Cross- dimensional shenanigans
Any and all general or advanced Time Weirdness
Also, current time with the above premise if interested
Open to magic, doubles, and other creative concepts

Borstal Verse
Borstal system:
English reformatory system designed for youths between 16 and 21, named after an old convict prison at Borstal, Kent. The system was introduced in 1902 but was given its basic form by Sir Alexander Paterson, who became a prison commissioner in 1922. Borstal institutions were originally designed to offer education, regular work and discipline, though one commentator has claimed that "more often than not they were breeding grounds for bullies and psychopaths.
This is a verse that will likely allude to if not deal with themes of abuse.
This verse is relatively flexible timeline wise. I am more than happy to adjust decades, include magic and ghosts, or do something more straight forward. My base character background for this is that there would still be magic but that instead of being drug down to hell Edwin ends up at Borstal after the attempted sacrifice--the sacrifice fails and he's punished along with the rest of the boys even though he was arguably the victim in the equation.

Witchmark
Very Loosely Based on Witchmark by C.L. Polk
World Set Up: Roughly Edwardian / WWI but a secondary universe so historical accuracy is not a concern
Magic:
Those with primary and secondary magics. Primary involves Storm Singing and combative magics while healing and other skills are considered secondary. If someones magic / mage ability is secondary they are often pressured to be bound to someone with a primary ability making them more like a battery pack for the primary mage.
(this is partially from the books but not 1 to 1 because I'm still reading and I want to have freedom to play around)
Edwin
I am taking the MC from the books plot line for a base which means: Edwin signed up as a medic for the army to avoid becoming bound to someone else. Depending on when a thread takes place he could be still in or just out of the military. If out of the military then he has faked his death. He has a secondary magical skillet around healing.
Plots Interested
Anything but some ideas include
"I thought you were dead" reunions
Battlefield Reunions of all kinds
Arranged or pressured binding
Childhood and adult shenanigans
I'll add more when I think of them

you do not have to have read the books for this I promise and doubles can doubtlessly join me here and anywhere

"You do plenty." It could have been a barb or a balm and Edwin wasn't entirely sure which one he meant it to be.
Then Charles' put his chin on his shoulder and he snapped the book shut. It was almost a flinch and completely unwarranted and it only added to the foolish feeling he had growing in his stomach. "Astrology. Astronomy would likely be more useful."
It did not matter when Charles' was born because Astrology didn't mean anything. It did no matter if their Death Dates and times would change it because it was immaterial. And it most certainly did not matter that Edwin had a birth date, a death date, and a date out of hell.
None of it mattered and he had been foolish for thinking so much about it. "I thought it might prove to be a resource but I was wrong."
Charles liked to believe he was mature enough not to wear his feelings on his sleeve, but even an untrained eye could read his face like a book-- something he usually did with Edwin, which made his partner's recent lack of clarity all the more unsettling.
The subconscious clench of his teeth sharpened Charles' features, and he fiddled with the clasp on his backpack strap, unaware his anxiety was showing. "Y'know. Makin' a point that you do the most work here, the rest of us are slackers, something like that…"
Even as he spoke, Charles realized it was a more unkind thought than he had intended, unfair to assume of his best mate, and his irritation deflated a bit as he hopped off his step-ladder perch to get closer. He took a deep breath and tried to let himself relax.
"Sorry, mate. Minging town's got me on edge tonight something fierce." Had Charles still been living his breath would have ghosted against the other boy's ear, leaning close in a familiar breach of space and resting his chin on Edwin's shoulder comfortably to get a good look at the open page. "This one with the little symbols, that's astrology or astronomy? Don't make fun."

"Almost..." Edwin answered absentmindedly, he was crawling through a few books that were mislabeled and not entirely intact. Was this one an accurate analysis on Tylwyth Teg and their reaction to things like Iron or was it a more fantastical retelling of mythology? He was already well aware of how Gwyn, king of the fairfolk, murdered Nwython and forced Cylendr to eat his fathers heart...
He snapped the book closed, placed it on the discard pile, and picked up another one. "Last one. Do you need a story to survive the last two minutes?"
@edwinoutofhell + charles
charles' legs kick back and forth as he boredly waits for edwin to finish gathering the new books for the office. while he enjoys making his best friend happy and indulging his ever growing library he finds the lack of doing anything...well, boring. but if they're going to get the seventy odd books edwin has chosen back they need his bag of tricks and he can never really say no to the older ghost. " so, got them all? cause i think if i make any more noise the librarian ghost is gonna kick me out. and we're running out of libraries i'm allowed into. "

The answer was yes, of course, we're not getting paid--but it wasn't a fact Edwin particularly cared about. He would have much rather had a fool-proof guide on how to make Charles' feel better that wasn't largely set on existing.
It doesn't matter would probably be met with a scuff at best and seen as pity at worst. Charles Rowland was the last person he would ever pity. He watched Charles study his own hands and ran an index finger along the edge of his book instead of touching him. "I could remind you about the times I have been, as you say, 'well shown' on a case. I believe you have been pressing me to learn some... defensive measures to that end."
That felt acceptable--a burden shared. If Edwin ever reached perfect perhaps he wouldn't have to worry about hell anymore but if that did happen, well, Edwin figured he'd have found himself back in hell.
Edwin watched him a moment longer, hands on his book that was still closed. Ghosts said a lot in the ways they wore their clothes, in the ways their faces were. Everything about Charles said I'm fine but also I'm not. It likely wasn't the time but Edwin pressed on anyway, "I was thinking we need to revise our questionnaire for cases."
After the Devlin House, Charles had doubled down on the lock and key in his mind so fiercely that he had convinced himself he could handle another 'prick dad goes mental on his wife, covers it up poorly' situation easy as breathing. Wrong phrase, tosser. You don't breathe anymore.
"I got well shown today, didn't I?" he managed, voice brittle like the eggshells Edwin was no doubt walking on. There was nothing to add after that-- of course, his timely partner had been the one to pull him off their now-unrecognizable client mere seconds before the telltale signs of hell flooded the room.
(For once in his aferlife Charles had been grateful for the red light, the way it swallowed up the blood splattered rich over the ground and his knuckles alike. Colored the world the way it had looked in his mind.)
He studied his hands, letting the sound of the tinny record player fill his head, and with a strange sense of disappointment noted that no bruises had been left. "Guess this means we're not getting paid, yeah?" he murmured, eyes humorless and glassy in the lantern light.

OOC.
I am on and finally able to cut posts again so replies are happening. But because I have also fallen down the rabbit hole: Like this post for a aesthetic and a verse based off it and our characters.
Feel free to give me info on what you are thinking or else possibly live in fear what my genre/prompt randomizer suggests because I will take anything to its most near impossible options if given free reign.
