One of the disciplines of the Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)
Eskrima or Escrima is often included in the top lists of the deadliest fighting arts in the world. It is also a complex system consisting of empty hand to hand combat, stick fighting, swordplay, knife fighting, grappling and gun disarms. Most people (often the ones practicing some other martial arts) when they hear the word Arnis, Kali or Eskrima they immediately think of just striking sticks and when you take the stick away from them and it’s basically nothing but that’s just one of the common misconceptions. Well, unlike most martial arts, Eskrima is a complete package which is why it’s being used in training soldiers here in the Philippines and in other countries. The terms Kali, Arnis and Eskrima is often used interchangeably but practitioners often use only one name for distinction of the style used. Of course it has sub disciplines which makes this art more complex.
The following are some of the different systems of eskrima:
Balintawak Eskrima
DeCampo 1-2-3
Modern Arnis
Traditional Arnis
Cinco Teros
Doce Pares
Dog Brothers Martial Arts
Espada y Daga
Inosanto Kali
Kali Sikaran
Kombatan
Lameco Escrima
Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis System
Lapunti Arnis de Abanico
Pekiti Tirsia Kali
Sikaran
Eskrima De Campo JDC-IO
(Lacsi Eskrima)
There are many more but since Eskrima practitioners and masters have been hiding their techniques during the Spanish rule in the Philippines and some kept being so, those unique techniques are lost forever. Even now some Eskrima schools face the same fate as there are lesser people that are interested to become students. Filipinos nowadays tend to be more interested in foreign arts like Kung Fu, Aikido, Muai Thai, Judo and Taekwondo(the most common one in the country). So if Filipinos would just show interest once more to our own martial arts that would be a very nice thing to witness.
