Electrical substation

Substation design
Stepping up and stepping down the voltage for distribution, transmission and for switching purposes, substations are basically used. When the electricity is generated, it has to be transmitted to far apart where it is required. So, to meet this requirement, substations are used to transmit the electricity at very high voltages and at low currents to reduce heat and many other transmission losses. Moreover, for safety purposes, circuit breakers, transformer and capacitor are also used by substations.Transformers transform the high voltage electricity to a lower voltage. Circuit switches used for the direct flow of electricity. Breakers stops the flow of current when the current flows too fast and too slow to safe the circuit from danger. Substation Layout

· Mesh substation: in this type of layout, two circuit breakers is required to connect or disconnect a circuit, and for the disconnection of a circuit, opening of a mesh is must. Without loss of supply or protection, circuit breakers may be repaired. There is no need of additional bypass facilities.
· One and a half circuit breaker layout: in this type of layout, 9 circuit breakers is there. One and the half circuit breaker is used to protect one feeder. Any one pair of circuits, or groups of pairs of circuits can be operated. There is less chance of loss of supply.

· Rules of spatial separation. Spatial separation rules include earth clearance, phase clearance, isolating distance and section clearance
· Separation of Maintenance Zones,

Three main separations are needed; the separation between the terminals of the bus bar and their connections, the separation between the terminals of the circuit breaker and their connections, the separation between the terminals of the feeder isolator and their connections.
