Entry one: Explaining the fandom

Ever since the beginning of my life I’ve been close to animals. As an only child with a pet, I learned they need much of the same things we do. You have to feed them, clean up after them, and most of all spend positive time with them. To me, they are very much like humans, each has their own quirks, likes, and dislikes. I decided being a Furry wasn’t far fetched for me seeing as that human element in animals is what Furries focus on, it had already been a part of who I am.

Like any other group, Furries are misunderstood. When I say Furry, I get mixed reactions. Some who know the Furry fandom ask more questions because the fandom is full of great people who are talented suit makers, drawing enthusiasts, animal caretakers, and yes, some go to more extremes. Many cringe and jump straight to old episodes of CSI where fursuiters were shown as sex-crazed idiots in the woods. While some may do such things, many don’t and agree it’s damning to the group. So please, don’t let extremists of any group ruin the chance to learn about the good people involved. I don’t condone that life, therefore, I simply stay away from them when/ if I meet someone who follows that path in the fandom. Problem peacefully solved.

Personally, I draw fursonas, mostly for myself and my friends. A fursona is a drawn representation of you (human w/ lifestyle and emotions) into an animal you think represents you or the way you want to be. This can be in a anthromorphic *an-thro-morfik* ( stands like a human, looks like animal) or quadroped * quad-dro-ped* (stands naturally as animal) form.

These drawings can be for fun or act as a guide to be the best person you can be by taking normally shy individuals and in effect masking them, the anonymity of the suit allows people to be more free to be outgoing. Eventually the person becomes more out going as well, then they go into making a new fursona or adapting the previous one into newer goals. Also a fursona is needed in the suit making process, a lot like a colored suit pattern. Many Furries show their products on Etsy, Facebook, and more recently YouTube.

All in all there are many reasons why people enter the fandom. Did you like any Furry movies/ shows? ( Any movie/show with an animal acting as a humans?) examples: Donald Duck, Bugs and Babs bunny, James and the giant peach, Scooby-Doo, The Animaniacs, Shark tales, …If it’s an animal that’s speaking, it’s grounded in Furry fandom.
