having the nhl as a baseline for athlete salaries makes me feel kind of crazy sometimes, because the hockey world will have heated arguments about players taking $8 million instead of $10 million or whatever because their team is in a no tax state. then I’ll hear someone casually mention what a male athlete in a different major league sport is making and it feels like the gdp of a small country

below is a transcript of an interview with elias pettersson and leo carlsson, done by uffe bodin! AndehWahl on twitter transcribed/translated it here, and the original interview is here :)
There are obviously many similarities between you two; drafted early, debuted at young ages, had huge expectations on you, how do you deal with that as a young player, how do you navigate through that and "find your place"?
EP: For me it was... just really cool. Playing against NHL teams, something you've always dreamed about. Just can't forget what helped you get there and try to be the player that you are, not change your game too much.
LC: Yeah same kinda. Everything happened so fast, suddenly you were in the NHL. It was sort of nice to not have time to think, just go out and play, especially the first couple of games.
You both came into the league and had some seasoned Swedes on your teams - Alexander Edler, Loui Eriksson (Pettersson: Markström!), Markström, Anders Nilsson. How important was that for you?
EP: Extremely important. They set the standard for me, but also to just have some familiarity. I mean, I moved half-way across the world (jokingly) so it was a huge step for me but I felt at home with the Swedes on the team.
And Leo you had Jakob Silfverberg and Isak Lundeström...
LC: Right, yeah. It helps a lot, especially off the ice. I had already lived alone in Örebro for a while but to move so far away... new stores, new everything... It's so nice to get help with the small things, how to act in the room and everything.
EP: Yeah everything is new.
Let's talk about contrast; Anaheim and Vancouver are two very different hockey markets of course, how has that been? Elias especially, it feels like Vancouver is one of - if not the most - tough markets out there. How do you get used to that, and the pressure that comes with it?
EP: Yeah... [laughter] I've been on both ends of that, both positive and negative, but I see it only as a positive. It's a city that breathes hockey. Hockey in Canada, it doesn't get better than that. Just look at the playoffs last season. It was the coolest thing I've ever experienced in my life. The arena, the buzz - between games you see cars with Canucks flags driving around - it's difficult to explain but it's so amazing.
For you Leo, perhaps the positive for you is life outside of hockey. I imagine you can move around a little easier...
LC: Haha yeah, I've maybe taken 3 fan pictures in 2 years. [Laughter] But it's growing and getting better and better. But it's quite a difference. When we get to Vancouver it's always a full building. The first time I got there, we were like last place in the league, and the arena was still packed on a Tuesday. Insanely cool.
EP: ...it's not too bad to visit the heat in Anaheim either... [Laughter]
LC: Haha yeah can't complain about the temperature.
Yeah it rains pretty much in Vancouver, right?
EP: Yeah it does... but the winters don't get so cold so I don't mind it.
But alright Elias, so how have you dealt with not being able to move around as freely as Leo can?
EP: Depends how you look at it. Sure, you get recognized, but you get recognized because you're a hockey player. You're living your childhood dream, so I'll happily deal with that. I've had it much worse when I grew up so I do my best to be happy and accommodating. It's a good "problem" to have.
I'm guessing you've experienced more than the 3 encounters Leo had...
EP: Yeah haha... yeah for sure, but everyone that approaches me are great so I try to spend as much time with them as I can.
