Something strange occurred to me about the way I run DnD, whether it’s ADnD, Pathfinder, 3.5 or 5e, I’ve never once used an official adventure or even setting. I’ve never premade a character for a player to choose, and I’ve recently started doing a Session 0 at the start of each new campaign I run. The ‘something strange’ is that I assumed this was how everyone ran their DnD groups, but apparently not.

I’m really interested to see how it would be to run a premade adventure, but I’m wondering how much I would end up using from the adventure guide. The fun parts of being a DM to me is inventing places, people, cultures, religions, villains, heroes of legend, ruined empires and horrorible monsters and scenarios for my players to overcome.

To anyone who plays official premade adventures: how do you find it? Are they useful? Have you ever encountered a problem where a player ‘read ahead’ and found out the plot to know how to react or how to derail the game?

Would love to hear from fellow DnD players but any system is welcome!
