Nature Vs. Man:
This photograph captures a tension between the natural world and the human development being added. The Bixby Creek Bridge, situated perfectly between the mountains, trees, plants, and ocean, illustrates how human-made structures can impact our environment. In the background, you can see the plants starting to grow above the railing on the road, which shows how, over time, nature reclaims its space and breaks through the boundaries that we humans set. Even though humans attempt to shape and control nature, it can resist and continue to thrive in its natural habitat.
This photo was taken on April 25th, 2025, at 12:10 pm, while my family and I were driving over the Bixby Creek Bridge in Monterey County, California. My parents knew I needed to take a photo for this art assignment, so we decided to explore Monterey and stopped right before this bridge. We all jumped out of the car, and I took this photo with my iPhone 14 Pro Max, using only my hands. The iPhone still resembles a traditional camera obscura and has an image sensor. “In digital cameras, the image sensor converts incoming light into an electrical charge, which the camera's software reconstitutes as a photograph for display on the camera's screen and for saving to a computer”. (Patrick Frank, 9.2 techniques). I used depth of field to make the bridge the focal point of the image. I wanted the bridge to be the center point, and where everyone's eyes are drawn, to show how humans look at the bridge, before they look at the nature surrounding it. Similar to photographer Chris Steele-Perkins, I also focus on the profound human impact on our surroundings. Although the impact of this bridge is not nearly as significant as the impact of the series of Marshall Islands, they both demonstrate how nature can reclaim some of its space from human trash and buildings. I chose this photo to reflect the impact humans have on the natural world. Human impact does not have to be significant and seriously destroy nature, but, like this bridge, it can take over some of nature's habitat; however, the plants are slowly making a comeback. This photo subtly highlights the human impact, rather than overwhelming the viewer, which was my goal for this project.
I edited using the Apple Photos editing tool
I slightly edited this photo to enhance the natural contrast.
I increased the saturation to 29 to make the plants and trees stand out with more color.
I decreased the shadow to -6 and increased the black point to 35 to have the bridge and railings look colder.
I increased the contrast to 8 to make the bridge appear darker and more intense.
I increased the sharpness to have the texture of the bridge and the plants at the bottom of the image stand out more.

Virtual Sketchbook #3
Part 1: This artwork is called Infant Bacchus and the Nymphs of Nysa by Luca Giordano. It is an oil painting on canvas, showing many figures and movements. This artwork is quite large, with the dimensions being 79 ¼ x 126 5/16 in. Throughout most of this painting, warm tones are used, including dark reds and goldish yellow. Earthy tones are also used, such as browns and shades of blue for the sky and background. This artwork is framed in a rectangular gold frame, with different lines throughout, making it textured.  This artwork depicts a mythological scene filled with children and female figures. There are many children throughout this painting; many are in the sky, floating, while the others are scattered on the floor, crawling and playing with objects, and one is crying. The women have gowns on that are red, white, and gold. The women appear to be in different emotional moments. One woman is reaching out, while the others are consoling the grieving women. In this painting, the women and the children's faces create a sense of emotion and energy. Giordano balances this painting by having the figures posed in such a way as to guide the viewer's eye around the painting. There is also a contrast between the warm, golden skin tones of some of the figures and the darker, more dramatic background, which gives depth to the painting. The women are still the focus of the painting, so you can feel the feelings being released by the women's expressions. This painting represents the Baroque art era excellently because it captures movement and emotion.
Part 2: This painting makes me feel many types of emotions. When looking at this painting, I feel a bit of awe, curiosity, and sorrow. The drama in this painting and the intense emotions on the women's faces make me want more; it makes me feel like I am seeing some deep emotions, maybe relating to loss or love. The women's consoling of other women shows how the world should be. We as humans should be comforting others when they are in need. This artwork also reminds me of the religious artwork in my church. It is the same as those in the church I attend because they also have what seem like oil paintings, and they portray struggles as well. This artwork speaks to me because in 2024, I lost both of my grandmothers in a matter of 3 days, and it shows how in need I was for someone to console me like those women were doing to each other. I relate to the emotions in this painting because it tells a story of hardship but also shows care and support. I was struggling with going to school and processing my feelings from the deaths, but I was able to power through with the care and support from my family and friends. What I relate to the most is the emotions. This painting does not appear to be staged; it shows something extremely human. Humans are capable of hiding their emotions, but there is always a point when you cannot help it, and you just have to let them all out, as the women and some children are doing in this painting. This painting is life; sometimes, it is beautiful, but sometimes, it is chaotic and tragic.
Part 3: This painting is a part of the Baroque era. This art era was massive in Europe during the 17th century, and many emotions were expressed. This painting was probably done for an individual who was a patron or a member of the aristocracy, which was the type of people Luca Giordano painted for. The subject matter of this painting is the infant Bacchus being nurtured by the Nymphs of Nysa. This is a mythological story from Greek and Roman mythology. The infant is cared for by nymphs, and they play with him or offer him grapes. The artist Luca Giordano is an Italian artist renowned for his speed and ability to copy other artists, and he is the leading Neapolitan painter of the later point of the 17th century. Giordano painted primarily in Naples, Italy, but also painted in Spain. I am unsure how long it took Giordano to complete this painting, but he has a nickname, “Luco fa Presto,” or “does it quickly.” I imagine it would've taken a few days to weeks to complete this painting. This painting was completed in 1660. This painting is a celebration of mythology and a display of artistic skill. Infant Bacchus and the Nymphs of Nysa highlights Luca Giordana’s skill in Baroque painting, speed, and knowledge of classical mythology.

Part 4: After researching Infant Bacchus and the Nymphs of Nysa by Luca Giordano, it highlights that this painting holds significant cultural, historical, and value. This painting provides an opportunity for ancient stories to continue being celebrated. The use of mythology in this painting and the Baroque era bridges the gap between ancient times and the modern day. I have selected this artwork because it attracted my attention. The passion and the emotions sparked my interest. The emotion in the women's faces allowed me to see their true feelings and how they compare to everyday life. I enjoyed how this artwork depicted genuine feelings and not staged ones. This painting is not just art; it is a piece of history that bridges the culture between mythology and modern-day art.

Virtual Sketchbook #2- Connecting Art to Your World
My nana brought me a bright red teddy bear when I was born. My nana loved the color red; even her hair was red. The color of the red teddy bear and her red hair were different shades. My nana's hair was more of a maroon red (dark red with a hint of black), while the teddy bear was a bright, vibrant shade of red, representing different hues and the various values of red. I kept this teddy bear with me at all times. I slept with the teddy bear, took it to the park, and took it to school, which made it lose its bright color and caused it to have a low-intensity shade of red.  During her funeral, I laid down red roses on her grave, which were fully saturated red because they were fresh and vibrant. I still have the teddy bear, but because it has been washed and used for the last 18 years, it has become a lighter shade of red.  If I had to pick a color scheme for my life, I would choose blues. I have always loved the color blue. I think blues represent calmness, which I get when I go to the beach.

Virtual Sketchbook #2- Journaling
Unity: something that is the same. Making something parallel with each other. (My workout playlist has more upbeat songs, which makes them similar to each other.)
Variety: something that is not the same. Making something perpendicular to each other and being different. (My workout routine is not just about arms; I also do legs and cardio, giving it a variety. )
Balance: something that is even on a line. Something that has the same about of two different elements. (If I study for too long, I will become tired, but if I balance studying with breaks, I will be more refreshed. )
Emphasis: something that your eyes are drawn to. Something that pops out.(My eyes are drawn to my phone when I get a notification.)
Subordination: something that your eyes pass over. Something that lacks importance. (While watching TV, my eyes pass over the TV and pay attention to my phone.)
Directional forces: something that your eyes follow.(While driving, my eyes follow the stop lights and the street signs.)
Repetition: repeating a particular part of something. (I brush my teeth every morning and night, which is a repeated action.)
Rhythm: something that goes with one another, which creates those things to repeat. (While walking, my rhythm stays around the same, but if I start speeding up, my rhythm changes.)
Scale: how big/small something is to go with another thing, how they fit together.(The Nike logo on my shoe is small, but it's much larger on a billboard.)
Proportion: something that goes with another thing to match with each other.(Ordering a burger and it comes with a small bun, making the patties feel large. But getting a burger with a big bun makes the patties feel too small.)

Virtual Sketchbook #1
By: Emma Harrigan
This is a painting of my papa. This painting hangs above our kitchen counter at home, so I find myself looking at it every day. My papa passed away almost 2 years ago, so this painting is very special to me. This painting shows my papa sitting in a chair, placed outside, with a beer in his hand and his dog by his side. This painting is beautiful because it shows how laid back he was as a person, and it also shows how kind and thoughtful he is sitting in his chair and the smile on his face. I don't know the exact paint used for this painting, but if I had to guess from the texture, which is soft, and the finish, which is more matte, the artist used acrylic paint. The artist added texture to the trees, grass, dog, and my papa's clothing to draw your eyes to those areas and to make the painting seem more real, like a picture. This painting is in our house to remember my papa and look at him daily.
